The climate right now is that Republicans use everything they can to undermine and delegitimize this president. And it‘s actually un-American. It‘s traitorous, in my opinion. Do you want to give aid and comfort to our enemies? Continue to treat this president like he wasn‘t elected and he doesn‘t know what he‘s doing! He knows what he did. He knows what he‘s doing. I‘m proud of him. I believe that he has the stalwart, resolute nature to get this done...

    Some of this is merely the result of pettiness--ignoble resentment, partisan hackdom, the desire to be proved right and to prove the likes of Rumsfeld wrong, irritation with the sanitizing, myth-making American media. That part of it I feel guilty about, and disavow. But some of it is something trickier: It's a kind of moral bet-hedging, based on a pessimism not easy to discount, in which one's head and one's heart are at odds.

    Many antiwar commentators have argued that once the war started, even those who oppose it must now wish for the quickest, least-bloody victory followed by the maximum possible liberation of the Iraqi people. But there is one argument against this: What if you are convinced that an easy victory will ultimately result in a larger moral negative--four more years of Bush, for example, with attendant disastrous policies, or the betrayal of the Palestinians to eternal occupation, or more imperialist meddling in the Middle East or elsewhere?

    Wishing for things to go wrong is the logical corollary of the postulate that the better things go for Bush, the worse they will go for America and the rest of the world.

On the comparison between Bush/ShoeBomber and Obama/UnderwearBomber:

Back then, everyone was on the same page....we all knew what had happened...we all knew we were at war...we had moral clarity...

Imagine, on December 22, 2001, when Richard Reid tried to bring down that plane, the attorney general emerging to call this an "isolated incident" of "extremism"....

Everyone KNEW that this was part of the same Al Qaeda design.

In fact, I remember one of the flight attendants who jumped on Reid saying she was only able to do what she did because of those who went before her...her ability to see and stop the attack was because of the experience of her dead colleagues.

No one called Reid, the "alleged bomber." No one said, wait, we can't jump to conclusions or comment because of a "pending criminal investigation."

When Reid tried to bring down that plane, ground zero was still smoldering. We buried my brother ten days earlier, on Dec. 12th. And we were one of the lucky families who received something to bury. The wound was still raw as can be.

To compare Richard Reid, three months after 9/11, to Abulmatallub, eight years after 9 /11, is to live outside history.

When I first joined CC I had a bowel problem. I nearly died at 5AM one morning. I strained and strained trying to take a DUmp. Then when I figured nothing was going to happen and the pain was too much I tried to stand up. I smacked into the wall and hit the floor. I had very nearly passed out. I drank a bunch of water from the bathroom sink because I couldn't really move anywhere else.

I guess the water helped. Maybe it was all dried up. 

Well, it wasn't a very good night for me at any rate. I mentioned it here but I got the feeling no one reads my posts. I guess I'll find out now.
