Ford offers buyouts to all UAW workers

DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co said Monday it is offering its 41,000 U.S. factory workers buyouts and early retirement offers in a bid to reduce its payroll costs as it aims to return to profit by 2011.

The buyouts mark the second round of such offers for Ford workers represented by the United Auto Workers union. About 1,000 workers took offers to leave the automaker in July.

Ford workers have until late January to accept the offers, which include payouts of up to $70,000 cash for newer hires to $60,000 cash for veterans already eligible for retirement.

Why would the administration have to?  Ford didn't take any bail out money.

I sincerely hope that's the plan, but if you check the rest of the article, it still has to be approved by the thugs and meatnecks in the UAW.

It'd be real simple if I were in charge.

General announcement to all employees:

We are no longer able to afford to stay in business.  Effective in 90 days we are shutting down all US operations.

Been nice having you in our employ.  Have a nice life in hope-n-change land.

p.s.  A double thanks to the Union for making this closure possible.

Same reason DOJ gets involved in some M&A activity, would be the common sense reason, I woudl think. But you and I know that they will get involved to protect the UAW. It's the exact opportunity they will need to shut down Ford and corner the market with gov't owned entities. I thought Ford would make it to at least 2016, but I also believe that the gov't will attempt to shut them down through regulation.

Dude...  you been asleep for the last year or something?  The current admin is trying to do that with all the major industries.

I like it!  Then Ford can simply move offshore and become just another foreign automaker, wait a few years, and then come back onshore and open up manufacturing plants like Toyota and Nissan and all the rest have done, and hire non-union for those new plants!

Why wait a few years?  Run help wanted ads and hire people shortly after the plants are closed.  Use the shut down time for a massive repair and maintenance time.

Reagan didn't have much trouble firing the ATC union members and replacing them.  Several local companies had lockouts and strikes several years ago, but they kept running with temp help and management.

*I crossed the picket lines, but it was supported by my union.*

It was also in the ATC union's contract that they could not strike.  As soon as they did, they were in breach, the contract was null and void, and he was not required to keep them.

Show me in Ford's CBA with the UAW that the goons can't strike...
