The radical Muslim imam linked to the rampage at Fort Hood reportedly is believed to have been killed in a Yemen airstrike that may have also taken out the region's top Al Qaeda leader and 30 other militants.

The raid in Yemen's east targeted an Al Qaeda leadership meeting held to organize terror attacks. U.S. officials believe radical cleric Anwar Awlaki was "probably" one of dozens of militants killed in the strike, a source confirmed to FOX News.

"Awlaki is suspected to be dead [in the air raid]," Reuters quoted an unnamed Yemeni official as saying.

The head of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, Nasser al-Wahishi and his deputy, Saeed al-Saudi Shahrani, were present at the meeting and are believed to have died, but their deaths could not immediately be confirmed.

"The raid was carried out as dozens of members of Al Qaeda were meeting in Wadi Rafadh," a source told AFP, referring to a rugged location about 400 miles east of the capital.

"Members of the group's leadership, including Saad al-Fathani and Mohammad Ahmed Saleh al-Omir, were among those killed," he was quoted as saying.

In an case...IMHO this is like an unexpected Christmas present.  There's a few less al-Qaeda terrorists roaming the earth today.

COIN warfare resembles Whack-a-Mole at times.  It can be won if you go after the head moles constantly and relentlessly, and never give them a sanctuary to build in, though.

Definitely a good news story, I do wonder how long it'll be until Hasan moves for his charges to be dismissed due to the Government 'Purposely assassinating' his defense witnesses, though.

Whack-a-Moles don't suffer from attrition. A better analogy would be Japanese pilots in WW2. On 12/7/41, they were a cadre of some of the very best in the world. After the attrition at Coral Sea, Midway and the Solomons campaign, the IJN pilots at the Marianas in '44 were no longer in that league. Attrition hits leadership and skills hardest, and what is left is less capable.

For the insurgent perspective on that, you might want to round up and watch a copy of "The Battle of Algiers."  It's actually a much more complex and iterative process than grinding up a highly-trained technical force like the IJN fleet air arm and the Imperial Army flyers was.

Since we are offered no choice, I am more than willing to trade a few of our lives for a lot of theirs. I like the kill a mole concept. We may not get all of them in one operation, but given time and persistence they will perish. For the time being, I am happy keeping them looking at the sky and wondering when their time will come.
