Searching in Vain for the Obama Magic

LINK

(excerpt)

By Gabor Steingart, Der Spiegel

Never before has a speech by President Barack Obama felt as false as his Tuesday address announcing America's new strategy for Afghanistan. It seemed like a campaign speech combined with Bush rhetoric -- and left both dreamers and realists feeling distraught.

One can hardly blame the West Point leadership. The academy commanders did their best to ensure that Commander-in-Chief Barack Obama's speech would be well-received.

Just minutes before the president took the stage inside Eisenhower Hall, the gathered cadets were asked to respond "enthusiastically" to the speech. But it didn't help: The soldiers' reception was cool.

One didn't have to be a cadet on Tuesday to feel a bit of nausea upon hearing Obama's speech. It was the least truthful address that he has ever held. He spoke of responsibility, but almost every sentence smelled of party tactics. He demanded sacrifice, but he was unable to say what it was for exactly.

An additional 30,000 US soldiers are to march into Afghanistan -- and then they will march right back out again. America is going to war -- and from there it will continue ahead to peace. It was the speech of a Nobel War Prize laureate.

I was upset to learn the cadets were required to be there 4 hours before the speech wearing their winter wool coats, so I imagine they were quite uncomfortable by the time Dear Leader made his appearance.  Way to care about your future army Mr. Obama.

Why can't he just sit behind the desk at the Oval office, and save us all the time, trouble and money ?

Because, dearest seabelle, it isn't, wasn't, never will be about anything but Teh Wun.  Those cadets are nothing more than a prop to him and his greatness (at least his self-perceived greatness.)

I feel bad for them being forced to sit and hear the most boring speech in human history (followed pretty close to Casto). Some was even asleep! Can you blame them?? Nothing about him deserves respect.

It is really telling when Der Speigle throws the messiah under the bus........they are likely pissed that he couldn't bother to participate in the "Fall of the Wall" anniversary.......as well they should be.

Germany is also a NATO member with a vested interest in the outcome in Afganistan, as well as the future of US military bases in their country.......they were looking for "leadership", and didn't find any........

Hi,

Was not too many years ago during the Clinton administration that Limbaugh was raging on about the difference between substance and style.  Well last night was a classic example, they got all the style points, had the right props at West Point, but there still was no substance.

A much older saying also applies, "The emperor has no clothes".  While many of us can easily say we told you so, Obama had no qualifications, did not have enough qualifications to run a McDonalds.  The no substance, high style got elected because the mainstream media ignored the thousands of red flags that conservatives screamed about but were ignored....and our country is going to suffer for years because of it.

regards,

The speech was "The calvary's coming, but we won't be there long no finish the job, and after we leave you'll get killed and raped."  Yeah, that'll make 'em want to cooperate.

He would not dare pull a stunt like that on ACORN or the SEIU (Make the membership sit in the cold for four hours before he showed up)
This is the kind of thing that made that idiot in Romania dead.  He forced several hundred thousand people to stand in a snowy square in Bucharest in late december while he ranted on about his trip to sunny Tehran for five hours.
An optimist sees the glass as half full, a pessimist sees the glass as half empty, an engineer sees that there is twice the glass required to contain the beer

Of course the membership of those organisations are likely to be oversupplied with lazy people with little sense of responsibility, so they'd more or less have to be rounded up at gunpoint to get somewhere early.

He is just going to keep up his shit long enough to have to pack up his bags when the next election hits

You're asssuming that there's going to be a "next election" - judging by the demeanor and activities of Herr-y Reid, Pelosi, and even Zero-bama, I wouldn't make that assumption too lightly.
