I Remember (Mama's Bank Account by Kathryn Forbes) Mama

Marta and I both have very fond memories of watching the film when we were both very young. We are watching it this afternoon for the first time in ages. I had forgotten a few things. My Marta is not named after the mother of the film. That mother was Norwegian. My Marta is Danish. Her father's name was Martel. Marta was thought to be a feminine form of his name.

Anyway, in the story we learn that Katrin is about to graduate from middle school. Times are hard for this immigrant family on Larkin Street in San Francisco. Circa the 1910s. Papa is a union carpenter. He is on strike at this time in the story. Very little $ for a graduation at that house.

Sometimes people forget what labor did for common people. Marta was on strike for 3 weeks right after I got my first job in 3 years. I was fired for union organizing in June of 1980. With America suffering the Reagan recession, trouble makers like me had a hard time finding work. Marta and I remember those days too.

Uh, fellow Cornhusker, Reagan wasn't even the Republican nominee for president, much less president.

That is something amusing about the primitives...they know Reagan was elected in 1980 so they always use that year.

If they actually knew anything about civics they would realize that he didn`t take office until 1981. :-)

The primitives always have a problem associating dates with personalities.

Perhaps the most grievous example was that of the now-exiled burdened primitive, the "socialist" "TylerDurden" primitive, the late-50s primitive who worked in an automobile-parts store in Michigan until he was laid off a few years ago.

The burdened primitive always whined about how Ronald Reagan had ruined his upward-inclining career, down in Texas.....but then as it turned out, the burdened primitive had lost his job in Texas in.....1978.

A local news staion kept trying to say that Obama had been in office for a year, one year after he was elected. "Today marks one year in office for President Obama"

That's akin to Uncle Joe Biden talking about how FDR went on TV during the Great Depression to allay people's fears. And the LSM did nothing about that. And Katie Couric sat there and nodded like the brainless bimbo she is. Classic example of LSM bias and stupidity.

Good catch coach. In their defense Reagan was elected that year so it's obviously his fault  :lmao:

I recall the DUmmies trying to blame Waco on W one little problem was Anne Richards was in the governor's mansion when that happened not W.
I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.
