UN warns of 70 percent desertification by 2025

BUENOS AIRES — Drought could parch close to 70 percent of the planet's soil by 2025 unless countries implement policies to slow desertification, a senior United Nations official has warned.

"If we cannot find a solution to this problem... in 2025, close to 70 percent could be affected," Luc Gnacadja, executive secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, said Friday.

Drought currently affects at least 41 percent of the planet and environmental degradation has caused it to spike by 15 to 25 percent since 1990, according to a global climate report.

"There will not be global security without food security" in dry regions, Gnacadja said at the start of the ninth UN conference on the convention in the Argentine capital.

"A green deal is necessary" for developing countries working to combat drought, he stressed.The next meeting on the convention is scheduled to take place in South Korea in 2010.

Lets see...

In the 70's we were told that there would be a new ice age in a decade.

Didn't happen.

In the 80's we were told that the ozone would be gone in a decade, and that we'd all be dying from solar radiation.

Didn't happen.

In the 90's we were told that global warming would flood the cities in a decade.

Now global warming has been re-named "climate change". I wonder what the next chicken little scare will be.

Since there really haven't proven to be any great ways to stop desertification yet, I would say it looks like there isn't any point in giving them money.  The rainfall is either there or it isn't, there are marginal areas where you can hold the line but it still all comes down to water supply, and temporary measures like irrigation only put a band-aid on an arterial wound.

All the more reason to push for global warming. More ice melts, becomes water, which evaporates and then falls as rain.

Experimental Weather Modification (or “mitigation” which is not defined in these bills), can affect all of us by reducing water supplies and changing agricultural crop production cycles (micro-climates), while reducing crop production and water availability. Since most experimental weather modification programs use chemicals released into the atmosphere the public could be subjected to increasingly toxic or unknown substances that could have negative effects on agricultural, drinking water supplies, crops, and trees. If the weather is changed in one location it may have severe adverse consequences in another region, county or state.

Now, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (Texas), and Congressman Mark Udall (Colorado), have reintroduced similar bills for passage this year.

The store I work for started right after Labor Day it is funny to see people come upto check out with a bathing suit and a Christmas ornament.

Whatever happened to the idea of towing ice floes from the arctic and antarctic?  I thought at one time that desalinization plants were to provide fresh water from seawater.

Kmart and Walmart are both in full swing. I can remember back in the 70's that Sears had a year around Christmas/Toyland, but that was back when people would use lay-a-way versus charge cards like now.
