San Jose council votes to ban most plastic and paper bags beginning in 2011

The San Jose City Council on Tuesday voted to make the city the largest in the nation to ban most plastic and paper shopping bags — and took steps to bring other Santa Clara County cities along with them.

Although the ban approved Tuesday won't take effect until 2011 — and still must go through an environmental impact study that will require the council's final signoff — it's a major new front in the war on plastic bags, which environmentalists say foul waterways, clog landfills and threaten wildlife.

Banding together as a region, top elected officials from Morgan Hill to Palo Alto joined Mayor Chuck Reed on Tuesday in support of San Jose's ordinance, which would ban the distribution of free plastic shopping bags at all retailers.

OBTW, your garbage, i.e., the stuff that actually goes into a land fill, goes into a plastic bag that you have to buy.

Welp.  If we can't use the grocery bags for our waste baskets, we get to buy bags?  Shoot, I bet you could make alot of $$, if you live in a state that still uses grocery sacks by selling em to people in CA.  The shipping would be nil.  Even, if you only charged a pittance, it would still be a profit.

The plastic bags used on dry cleaning will be replaced with---what.?

How will we get new clothing home from the store.?
 
How many bags will someone need to carry in order to keep cleaning chemicals and food separated at the Grocery store.

The list is endless as I think about the reuses I put those bags to, after I unload them at home.

When I travel I wrap my shoes in these bags, same as at home. Besides the fore mentioned trash can liners, they hold the scraps of paper that come from my home shredder and junk mail fliers.

I store small gardening items in them and just hang the bags on the wall in my storage shed. 

When I think of net or mesh shopping bags I think of the old Lady's that shop farmers markets in Europe and sea coast of the USA.

This could open up a new market for crafters designing fashionable bagging alternatives.

Men would buy bags with sports symbols or other men's interests.  Woman can go for the fun things, sparkles and secquins.

Doing away with plastic bags will lower the chances of bring home bugs.

I would like to see the pharmacy's go to glass vials to hold our medication. those plastic bottles build up fast and are too small to be used for much after they are empty.

All the spices, dried herbs we have, the freak en world runs on plastic.

In my neck of the woods I see more and more people using canvas shopping bags with the stores logo that they bought for $1.50. Ugly and a bit too small.

The strap is too short to place over head to carry bag under the arm, a must to keep away purse snatchers and keep hands free to examine goods.

Off I go to check out my fabric bin and see what I can come up with.    Thanks for the heads up.

There are definitely more attractive alternatives to the store's reusable bags.  I got some cute ones at etsy.com, a site for selling handmade stuff. 

I personally actually prefer to use reusable bags, cause I have some very pretty ones, but I strongly dislike the idea of being required to do so.
