Is calling people like Michael Steele, Clarence Thomas or Alan Keyes "uncle toms" racist?

Edited on Wed Sep-16-09 08:26 PM by devilgrrl
I ask because there's a so-called "progressive" caller on "Frangela" (Randi's out today).

He was lamenting Jimmy Carter's statement when "liberals" refer to Condi Rice, etc... as such things as "Uncle Toms". I personally haven't heard these terms used toward these people publicly but I am aware that Harry Belafonte did call Colin Powell a "house n----r" but that's about it.

You tell me.

Another question. Has anyone heard these terms used publicly by liberals? I haven't and think that the caller is a troll.

3. As a White person I would never presume to judge someone on their level of Uncle Tom-ness

It's probably not a good idea to "go there" unless you, too, are African-American.

7. The term is very descriptive and quite useful.

It's not race-neutral, certainly, but I don't think that it's "racist" either. It's derogatory, but the negative connotation is associated with specific behavior, not skin color.

A few say it's racist, but it is a thread full of people tip-toeing round the issue.

And what if 2 AA's on opposing sides of an argument use the slur against each other?

Personally I think the label Uncle Tom denotes someone of color incapable of succeeding on his own absent white paternalism.

With that in mind I'll leave you jeenyusses to figure out which party has the Uncle Toms.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

I thought this was pretty darned good:

Quote
Theatrical productions of Uncle Tom's Cabin played throughout the nadir (post Civil War and Reconstruction); but since the novel's indictment of slavery was no longer congenial to an increasingly white society, rewrites changed Uncle Tom from a martyr who gave his life to protect the people into a sentimental dope who was loyal to kindly masters. In the black community, Uncle Tom eventually came to mean an African American who sells out his people's interests and still does today. In my opinion the phrase "uncle tom" should not be used today by black people because it degrades the status of a man who wasn't in fact a sell out but a hero who's name should be used with reverence not disgrace.

Another question. Has anyone heard these terms used publicly by liberals?

For what reason would anyone else but liberals, publicly or otherwise, use these terms?

Short answer, YES.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Throwing the "Uncle Tom" label is the way the racist liberal/lefties strip a black person of his individuality.  The lefty/liberals love the idea of "African Americans" as a group, but the thought of individual black people acting and thinking as individuals makes the lefty/liberals very uncomfortable.  The liberal/lefties must, in order to maintain the necessary worldview, rob black folks of their humanity.

Wow!

I went through and got some names of primitives who have used to term to describe black pols with which they disagree, and this list isn't even 1% of them.

CatWoman (not surprising; she's one big, fat, ugly racist)
El Supremo
wndycty (3x)
Ernesto (3x)
FrenchieCat
trubrit71
LynneSin
Mad Maddie
Proud2BAmurkin

Sandpiper
Kahunor

'ecstatic' put out a poll asking if Powell & Rice were "Uncle Tom's."  59% of the primitives said 'yes.'

Lots of racism on Skin's island.

Absolutely - To Dems, Blacks=Votes. They really have no concern for any of their causes beyond what is necessary to secure their base as Democrat supporters and contributors. Once any minority goes conservative, they are demonized as race traitors, which says quite a lot about the party of individual liberty and freedom of expression.

Uncle Tom is a racial epitaph in the same way the 'N' word is. it targets a specific group of people who behave in ways that their 'masters' (in this case liberals) feel is inappropriate solely because of their race.

IMHO, it doesn't get any more racist than that.

I find it interesting that one of the factors they use in determining if an expression is racist - is the race of the user of the expression.

Isn't that - you know - racist.
