Those making $250,000 plus have an excuse for being repub but those that make less are lying to themselves. What's the expression, cutting off the nose to spite the face. But mostly I think religion and refusing to realize they are just ordinary people, like the rest of us.
They just don't get it.
I'm not rich financially. I probably never will be. I don't even know anyone who's rich except possibly the doctors I work with or by whom I'm occasionally treated. Especially at my age, I'm not willing to do the things it would take to become "rich" - the long hours, the risk, the sacrifice, the time away from family. For those who are, I'm not envious. My hat's off to them. I wish them continued prosperity.
I'm comfortable financially and the Lord has blessed me with good health. That's fine with me. I don't want money from someone else merely because they have more than I. The very idea is repugnant to me. I don't mind some of my taxes going to help the truly helpless, i.e. children, the elderly, the disabled and those struck by catastrophe beyond their control. I wish private charity could do it all. But this not being a perfect world, I accept a government safety net for those whom charity misses, as long as it's limited, tightly controlled and efficient, with state and local programs being predominant as opposed to centralized federal agencies. The more accountability, the better. They should be run by common sense conservatives, not liberals who see it as just another way of buying votes.
I'm against confiscatory taxes on the wealthy for the simple reason that I think all citizens should be treated fairly. If the rich have played by the rules and followed the law there is no reason for them to be penalized for their efforts by the government. They create jobs and add to the engine that drives a good market economy. They are citizens who should enjoy the same freedoms as everyone else. There is no long term upside for our society in seizing their wealth and redistributing it. We've seen the results of that in dozens of crap socialist countries. All it accomplishes is to bring everyone down to the same level of mediocrity and discontent.
Further, taxes perpetuate big, intrusive government. The more taxes they get, the more the bureaucracy grows. The more the bureaucracy grows, they more taxes they want. It's a vicious cycle. How many government programs, once established, ever get abolished or reined in once they've outlived their ostensible usefulness? Very few That I can recall. They just keep growing like weeds, sucking all the nutrients from the rest of society. It's antithetical to the cause of freedom and self-determination. It's just that simple.
