So I've asked for binoculars for my birthday - what kind should we get?

I'd like to use them to see more birds - is there a reasonably priced, but good pair which folks could recommend?

The primitive comments are pretty boring, being mostly technical stuff.

What's this deal with using tripods for binoculars?

I always thought tripods were for cameras and telescopes, not for binoculars.

If they are powerful enough, a tripod is needed to steady them just like a telescope.

A Tripod or some other form of stabilizer is useful for any "long" lens to prevent shake when you're looking at very distant objects.

Well, then, why don't toms peeping at birds use telescopes intead of binoculars anyway?

I dunno about anybody else, but I always thought this sort of thing creepy.

Binocs are much smaller, and far more manuverable.

Binocs are much smaller, and far more manuverable.

Robert Leopold, one of the twosome who murdered a kid in Chicago in 1924, was an avid bird-watcher, a child-prodigy at it, and even made presentations and wrote a book about it, by the time he was 16 years old.

But that of course isn't why I'm so blase about the matter, and I don't intend to discombobulate anyone who's enthusiastic about bird-watching.

The deal is, out here in the Sandhills of Nebraska, one is so surrounded by nature that one becomes indifferent to it.  One can have too much of something.

Bald eagles from the river will sometimes perch on the walnut trees, seen from outside the main dining room window.  Other people get all excited about them, but to me, when seeing them, they're just birds.

I used to enjoy boat-watching with binoculars. Over the weekend as I was with the wife and kids at her family's beach house way down in coastal Rhode-Island. There are always tall ships, and large sailboats used in racing and whatnot on summer days.

No interest whatsoever in the bikini clad women on the sailboats?  :whatever:

There usually aren't any on these - its all people in uniforms, often flying their countries colors, whatever they are. They are often making their way to or from Newport, Rhode Island. The bikini-clad hotties are usually in the smaller speedboats or tiny cabin-cruisers.   :-)

THAT'S why you need binoculars!   :naughty:

Although if I was caught (by "she who must be obeyed") using them for such a nefarious purpose, I would soon have no eyes to do it with....   ::)

A good pair of binoculars is a must when you least expect it.

I bought on sale at the Spy Museum in DC  a pair of glasses with a built in camera for under $50.00.  I believe it is the one advertised for bird watching on TV.

We also picked up an adequate tripod for under $20.00.

The camera is almost as good as  my expensive one and no need for a telephoto lens.

There is so much to see that one cannot get close enough to photo with a regular camera because of either crowds or police pushing people back too the point there is no reason to take a picture that will show people that are unidentifiable to anyone but the photographer.

I cannot afford a camera and the expensive lens so this is next best for me.

In my neck of the woods one never knows when some pollution or movie star will roll into town, Once a month someone will report seeing Johnny Depp but I would not know him in person from any other stranger.

I enjoy filming the big movers and shakers who can be identified by anyone.

With life changing so fast around us I would like to leave my kids not money---would if I could--but a glimpse into this time in history of things that will not be around when they become my age.

I took for instance a picture of the only red fire box left in town, then went looking for a real life phone booth, I found just one public phone on the outside of a gas station and it was out of order.

Before it was replaced I got pictures of the only swing bridge I have ever seen in my area from underneath to show the mechanism and how that sucker worked.

I love photography, some day I will take some classes in it, for now I must be content to take a picture of an old time metal ice cube maker that I have not seen in 30 years.

Go through your photos and you will see that what your eye picks up will not be identical to what is captured on film.

Unless you follow Ancel Adams and do alot of landscapes what use is there for photos of tiny people with no reconisable faces.?

You want a picture of grandma, you get right up there to see her face, to see the wrinkles of time and worry that made her into what you today know of her.

Relax Dude, this is a ME thing, when people head out to visit Europe or Asia I ask them to bring me pictures back.   They return with photos of churches and landscape.

ARGGGGGG I want pictures of the People, their dress, their homes from the poorest to the most wealthy.

I want to see pictures of humans and how all classes live, in that society actually live.

I want to see the faces of the people, the children to the very aged.

Do you LC EFA   have any idea of the power of a photograph to move one to tears or laughter ???

To be honest I shoot predominantly landscape and wildlife photography.

I actually do my utmost to never include people in photographs I take. Recently I took a trip to the USA and Canada - out of 5000 odd images I took, only a scant few actually have people in. There are more photos of some type of lizard I spotted in Florida than there are of people.

As for the power of a photograph - I think much of the "power" you speak of is decided by context not content.

Most true LC, our love of photography comes from very different view points [no pun intended]

I was raised on National Geographic and found my interest in the people, the faces of humanity.

You I take it go for natural science, the wonders of the world, far away places with strange sounding names.

Example, I bet you and I would love to head out to that island in Indonesia to do a photo shoot.

You would be forcing on the unknown animals and insects being found every day.

I would focus on the faces of the of the humans to gage their reaction to an unknown find.

Both of us would get what we want to as far as our interest goes, one of a kind photos of something never seen before and I would get the human reaction to the find.

Both, PRICELESS, one of a kind.
