I think people can have an extremely high IQ and still be mentally deranged.  Bobby Fischer comes to mind.

Some people think having a high IQ is some sort of shield against believing things that are flat out wrong but as it turns out, IQ doesn't equal right.  I'm not even sure it equals "intelligent" which seems kind of like some sort of weird paradox.  I mean there have got to be an awful lot of Mensa members who buy into the whole global warming hysteria.  And there has to be an awful lot who voted for the One.  And actually believed the whole hopey changey pablum.

 doesn't mean the average is above average. We have a whole lot of people here who don't know issues very well, argue primarily from emotional positions, just like to cheer, are followers, or only know what they have been told that sort of sounds good to them.

Over all, I'm guessing the IQ here is maybe slightly above average.

There has been a brain drain here over time. Real Activists don't tend to last long at DU. Anyone who is too vocal at supporting any lefty position, or any position that is outside the status quo either leaves disappointed or is removed eventually. Look at the history of the Feminism and LGBT forums as two places where that history has been obvious. DU is a centrist site and is not kind to non-centrists, no matter how intelligent they are. That kind of brain drain doesn't help the average IQ here either. What is left is a larger group of people who have less strong opinions and know less about those issues.

Yes, there are some brilliant people here. There are some amazingly intelligent people here. It would be wrong to assume that everyone here is therefore overly intelligent.

Perhaps a political IQ question would be fun as well.

BTW, I have been observing behavior here for several years now and people will often state their IQ is high or state broadly that DU has many brilliant minds - I was curious where DU falls on the spectrum. There are basic reasons to assume that DU is above average though - heck, even Free Republic probably has a higher-than-average IQ score.

 Which basically means that it measures how efficient the brain is at using logic to find the proper solution.

That doesn't mean that someone who has an IQ have 200 is   going to be a physicist. And it doesn't mean that someone with an average IQ is going to be a janitor.

It does, however, give an intellectual advantage to a person with a higher than average IQ.

IQ has little to do with intelligence, just as having a 1000 HP under the hood doesn't always translate into how fast a car can go.

Both depend on how, and how well, you can use them (if at all)....

Wasn't the uni-bomber a genius (and a leftist)? What the hell does that do for you? I score very high on intelligence tests, even the math parts where in reality, I'm sadly lacking. My husband doesn't do so well but the equations he works with as an engineer look like Greek to me? The difference? I, like a lot of people, test well. It's probably one of those right brain/left brain things.

For a group that views itself as being so intelligent, they sure don't get their way very often.  Really smart people should have easily figured out how to make gov't officials do exactly what they want them to do, and yet, the primitives consistently complain they don't get their way.  Maybe there's a disconnect between how smart they think they are and how stupid they really are.

There was this other guy who was a Mensa member and really proud of his high IQ.  He had some dispute with his neighbors and left a six pack or something of poisoned soda on the door step.  The family, being rather large, just assumed they had bought it and someone got distracted on the way to putting it away.  The mom drank one of the sodas and died.

They got him to confess by sending an agent who was also a Mensa member to this guys meetings, she befriended him and he was so proud that his IQ was so high he could get away with murder he let enough details slip to this undercover agent.

I think I saw this some years ago on The New Detectives or some other Discovery Channel show.

Oh here, this appears to be the case:

I remember watching the show wondering if a high IQ could be some form of birth defect because as intelligent as this guy seemed, there still seemed to be something missing from his makeup.  This Trepal guy doesn't appear to have a political ideology so it would probably depend on whatever set the individual off.  The Una-bomber was in a heavily left wing environment when his illness manifested.  If he had been under some other ideological or religious influence then he may have acted out in that way although there is little doubt that violence for a cause is usually celebrated when the cause is leftist.  Even after he was caught, the Una-bomber was treated with kid gloves.  But I digress.

I think it is the idea of being apart and above the masses that give such personalities the internal justification for their crimes and the arrogance to think they are smart enough to get away with it.

I dropped out of highscrool, got a GED. Yet When tested they tell me I have the education of a 6 year college grad. Hmmm, seems to me their intellect over there don't mean shirt!

Either that or a college education ain't what it used to be.
