Should a 13 y.o. granddaughter be forced to visit grandma in a
   
nursing home?

My brother is highly upset at his daughter, who's 13. She flatly refuses to visit my mom in the nursing home, who's been there since last August. My brother's wife is on the daughter's side. I gather this is an on-going issue with her, she has yet to visit or call.

My mother doesn't have much time left. She still has her mind, so it's not like she wouldn't know her.

I don't want to take sides, it's really none of my business and don't want to get involved. I just don't know what the right answer would be.

This girl has received a lot of expensive jewelry and bedroom furniture from my mother last August when she emptied her apartment. I would think she would at least pick up the phone to thank her, or better yet, visit. I guess I'm leaning towards making her go. Wouldn't she regret not saying good-bye? Would it harm her to go? Could she just write a short note?

What do the wise DU'ers say?

I hate people who make it about them. They get to live, the grandmother doesn't. Suck it up if you're scared and visit.

Trust me. I lived with my grandma when she was dying in the hospital and I made sure to visit her every day. I was there only an hour or so before she died and I'm glad I went. I'm glad I said goodbye and I'm glad I got to say "I love you" one last time.

I absolutely hate nursing homes, but that's not going to stop me from sucking it up, putting on my "big boy" pants, and paying respect to those I love.  I'm sure grandma has looked at other options such as meeting somewhere outside the home for a few hours, but if you're that sick that even that's no longer an option, the little beyatch ought to get past her "ick" factor long enough to thank her elders for what she's been given.

Little ingrate?  Oh, and the wife is a ****ing ingrate too.

It's about principles.

Assuming liberalism has any: how can you justify statements that a 13 y/o girl can be given contraceptives, have sex and get an abortion without parental input but then on this matter the child is to be treated as--well--a child?

Liberalism is hard to argue with because it has no principles upon which its answers are predicated. You get to make it up as you go along. Near as I can tell Me-ism is the core principle and all other policies descend from it. Gay marriage? I can't tell if liberals want gay marriagee to tear down churches or if they want to tear down churches to get gay marriage; all I can tell is SOMETHING is in their way and notions of life-long committment is one of them. Abortion for women's rights is awesome--especially since it trumps men's rights--until people have gender-selective abortions. Liberals can't stand low-tax nations because they get all the money and jobs but they wail like cats when you wannan make American a tax haven.

You people don't know what the @#$% you want apart from your next blow-job and cheap dose of moral outrage. It's all that defines you.
