Outrage builds in Anchorage after bear attacks

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Spring is here and bears are emerging from their dens for the short stroll to Alaska's largest city. Some residents are putting out the NO VACANCY sign.
Anchorage has a reputation for being bear tolerant but after three maulings last summer — including a 15-year-old girl who nearly bled to death when attacked by a grizzly in a city park — a chorus of outrage is building.
Wanda Phillips is among them. She recently moved from Washington state — where she saw no bears — to the Anchorage suburb of Eagle River, where there are lots of bears.
Last summer, Phillips saw at least 10 bears near her home. A grizzly camped out in her back yard defending a moose kill. Alaska Department of Fish and Game officials told her to keep the family inside until the bear was finished with the carcass.
"It (that advice) didn't seem very helpful to me," she said. "We have a real safety problem. The fact they are ignoring it is a time bomb."

I think it's time for Governor Palin to authorize helicopter hunting again.  The only requirement is that the DUmmies that moved to Alaska from other states and are complaining is that they wear bright orange to make them easier targets for the helicopter hunters.  :-)

Hey, I'm no big fan of bears in the yard, but Wanda, maybe you should move back to the Soviet Socialist Republic of Washington.  It would be better if we could keep your kind - those who move in an expect the new home state to change to suit them, instead of adapting to it - in one concentrated place so they can't **** up the rest of the country.

AMEN!

Wanda, the women in Alaska, Sarah Palin especially, are more man than your DUmmie significant other.

Bear.  And shopping in downtown Rochester?  Surely you jest.

Here in Montana wildlife biologists were saying over a decade ago that the griz are moving south out of the Bob Marshall Wilderness.  Griz are territorial critters so as new male cubs are born, they are forced to move out of the area where they grew up to create their own domain.

It will be interesting indeed when the first griz sighting is made in the Helena area.

The city is already in a deer culling mode.  They bait and trap them, then using a bolt gun they kill them and the meat is processed and given to those having a hard time making ends meet.  I'm not a fan of the culling.  It is enjoyable walking out the front door and seeing anywhere from a couple to as many as 12 deer grazing on the grass.  I just stand there and watch and they pay me no heed.

They just don't get it that when you build in the deer's natural habitat, they move into ours.  The folks with the money have been building some rather expensive homes in the wilderness surrounding Helena smack dab where the deer live.
