When I drove Teresa around in Madison in 2004 was when I saw how Elizabeth Edwards was percieved   Updated at 3:16 AM

Edited on Fri May-08-09 03:14 AM by zulchzulu
I was a driver for the Kerry campaign in 2003-04 when he and others in the campaign visited Madison, Wisconsin. I got to be the driver for John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Chris Heinz, Vanessa and Alexandra Kerry, Teresa Heinz Kerry and others that were visiting the city leading up to the successfully won Wisconsin primary as well as during the preparations for the first debate between Kerry and Bush in the presidential race.

Having moved to the area from San Francisco just months before, I was a little lost every now and then with the city's oddly complex one ways and other labyrinthine road tendencies. GPS was still expensive...

What was an amazing experience was driving Teresa Heinz Kerry and her friends around the city and to a few events before she spoke to a couple dozen people at the Kerry headquarters near Capitol Square. Looking back, Kerry was behind Al Sharpton at that point in late November 2003 in national polls. The Iowa race was just beginning to come to fruition. That is another story for the ages.

Why do I bring this up?

Well, it has to do with the perception within the people who were in the inner circle of the Democratic primary about who was doing what and how it would all work out in the end as the Primary results started coming in that then lead to the 2004 Presidential race.

When I arrived at the private airport to pick up Teresa Heinz Kerry and friends, I didn't know what to expect. I had the big van and was ready to take them to several destinations that would take all day. Meeting Teresa was very engaging. She is a wonderful person... articulate, attractive, not snobby... Her friends had been with her on their beginning tour of the country that would lead to the national Presidential race.

As everyone piled into the swanky van, Teresa sat in the front seat with me and we engaged in political talk about the primary race. She was very down to earth and funny.

What was the reason why I am posting this is how the others talked about what was going on. They were pretty unplugged. One said "did you see Elizabeth Edwards on CNN this morning? Does she own a comb?"... Teresa rolled her eyes when I peered over while trying to figure out how to get to the first destination.

Another then chimed in "It's Elizabeth who wants the keys to the White House, not John..." and there were mild chuckles amid the others within earshot.

Let me be clear that Teresa Heinz Kerry was not in any way a participant in the discussion. She was either pondering the landscape or was talking to me or looking at her notes.

But what the others were saying was something I always thought about; particularly regarding the relationship with John and Elizabeth Edwards. Frankly, I only wish them both the best at this point and certainly hope Elizabeth Edwards has the upper hand in her health troubles.

I thought I would share this experience in light of the Oprah interview and all the coming repercussions that Elizabeth Edwards' book will invoke.

On edit: changed from "operating" to "percieved"

Real plausible there, DUmmy

Yeah, a multimillionairess and wife of a sitting US Senator regularly calls a ****ing Airport Shuttle to get guided around town.
Feeble attempt, DUmbass.

And when you brag about switching from one word to another, try to spell the new word correctly. "Percieved." Only a DUmmy.

Anyway, the point is to take a DU Icon (Elizabeth Edwards) down a few more pegs:

She may be thinking that writing the book and talking about it are a good catharsis for her, but she should think of her children, especially the small ones. Does she want them to hate their father, especially after she is gone?

The clip that I saw showed her talking about guarding her family, about the other woman wanting what was hers, instead of building her own. About, even, John's life vs. hers. But all she is doing is hurting her family, instead of guarding it.

Sad.

Yet when outright lies were written about the Bush family, why, bring 'em on!

Well, well, well, look at DU attacking the victim.  Edwards cheated on his wife, he had a long term mistress.  He was having an affair while his wife battled cancer, and now who is the bad person?  Elizabeth Edwards, for daring to tell the world that she was terribly hurt by her husband's affair.  Way to be Feminists DU!  Blame the victim! Freaking idiots.

You forgot to mention that Edwards used his wife's illness as a tool to keep his campaign (feebly) going.

Anyway, another thread definitively proving that liberalism is a mental disease and the democrat party is a cult.

Now that right there should have told the DUmmies they had a loser.... :rotf:

So basically, regardless of all the rhetoric about feminism and their desire to be valued for their intellect and ideas, when women on the left insult other women they resort to bitchy little insults about another woman's looks. That's SO high school.

Did it ever occur to you, you stupid cow, that she may have known but was sick & weak and busy trying to be a mother in between puking her guts out after chemo treatments, to have the time or strength to deal with her cad of a husband? You people are so predictable it's pathetic. If John Edwards was a Republican, Elizabeth's book would've been "brave", "cathartic", "exposing hypocrisy of Republican men", etc.

I call BS on this post on the simple premise of "Where were the Secret Service guarding Teresa and John?" As a high profile spouse of a Presidential candidate, much less having the presumptive Democratic Presidential candidate in a vehicle, you just don't have any Airport Van picking up VIP's. The Secret Service is behind the wheel of the vehicle as well as they have GPS, security, and very specific  primary, secondary and optional routes already predetermined by the Secret Service and local law enforcement personnel. You don't have one van, you have a motorcade.

This guy is a :loser:

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Yep.  She actually posted there a few times before certain elements ran her into the ground.  I'd have to search for it, but the whole sordid story may be on the Kos site.

She took the DUmmies to task for ridiculing Laura Ingraham when she was diagnosed with cancer.  If that was Elizabeth Edwards posting at all.

I look at John Edwards as the embodiment of the Dem party (presented as clean-cut, all-America, but really just a liar and a cheat) and Elizabeth as all the special interest groups (especially the black community) who keep hoping he'll remain true to her, and keep telling themselves he really means what he said again this time, but always being the afterthought and the used doormat.

149. Of course we wish the best for her in this fight.

I have been a Democrat for a long time, and part of the Democratic principles that attracted me as a young person and kept me a Democrat all these years is our compassion. Democrats are simply good and decent people. And good and decent people want everyone to do well -- those who agree with them and those who do not. We fight for the right of voices with which we disagree to speak out, for the right of people to say things we don't believe to be true, even for the right to be malicious and mean-spirited. If we fight for the right for LI to say what she says, how in the world can we use our disagreement with those words as an excuse not to be compassionate in her fight with cancer. Being willing to have her voice muted by illness is the same thing as not wanting her voice to be heard. It is not Democratic or democratic.

I hope others will join me in wishing her Godspeed in this fight, for the easiest road that she can have, and even for the development of compassion about others who have faced hardship and disease without the support network she -- and I -- have. As I go through treatment for this same disease, I think often about the women who fight breast cancer without health insurance, without a supportive husband, with a physically demanding job that doesn't know or doesn't care that she is exhausted and weak and aching, with children but no child care. I find it absolutely impossible that LI won't also have those thoughts run through her head or that she won't rethink her position on health care or the social safety net. Pray for her health AND her enlightenment, if you must. But pray, with me, for her good health.

Much more DUmmy hatred at the link.

For years, I wished the best for people only to hear the hatred doled back at me..I've resisted hating..but it's slowly taken over.

You've used your life experiences to come to a different conclusion. And your recent life experiences are a hell of a lot more harsh than anything I've dealt with thus far and so are hers given the threat.

And anymore I view that level of compassion as a weakness or something I've been DUPED by to even acknowledge it.

I am sorry..not only because it looks bad to be responded to by Elizabeth Edwards right when I know I've been an ass..but because everytime I say "so the F____ what" about LI...someone else says it about you. Sorry for creating that.

Thanks for the response. I don't have much choice other than to transform in the moment of this communication or shivel up.

I appreciate you presenting me with that opportunity.

18. It has been a long, strange trip
Like you, one part of me wants this to be over soon. Then again, unless it's a Kerry blowout, the final decision may still indeed be for at least a few more months of litigation and spin.

I've been following Kerry and filming him and his family when I had a chance and I've been looking at the videos from back in August 2003 to now and there is so much hope that is part of the message. So much honesty. So much dedication and so many emotions. There are so many people out there that want change so badly.

I'm convinced Kerry will win. That is the only way I think right now.

November 3rd is too far away.

If Bush steals the election, November 3rd will mean the beginning of a long and possibly bloody war to get America back from the criminals, liars and chickenhawks.

I'm not kidding.

110304.

Either we win and get America back or we mobilize for the next fight. November 3rd might seem like an eternity from the day before.

44. All the passionate people I met this election year....of all stripes...
Edited on Thu Dec-30-04 07:59 PM by zulchzulu
I was and still am a Kerryhead. I met many Dean fans, Kucinich fans, Edswards fans, Clark fans and all matter of those deeply involved and passionate about all the other issues that were so dedicated, so thrilled with their choice and mission, so unified with others around them that agreed and spent tons of hours, money and were willing to show up even in the worst weather conditions on the streets and within minutes of posting fresh news on their web sites...it brings tears to my eyes how much passion this year brought to so many politically.

I've gone to those corners on the street where these events happened and can feel the ghosts of that time where democracy was real...and not something we would doubt is still alive due to the black box voting events that pollute what we have fought for.

As much as I don't like the political message of Bush fans, I did run into some that were passionate about their choice. Frankly, I found they were uninformed of the issues and what was really happening, but I give a hats off to them for their dedication.

It was all grass roots. No waiting for the Cavalry to arrive to get going and get the message on the virtual and real street. What I do favor are people that take it to the street over just blogging their passion. There is nothing like being in the political trenches on the street.

This kind of political passion would make our Founding Fathers proud. In the trenches, fighting for our cause...whatever it is.

The day I drove Ted Kennedy around Madison in 2004
I had the wonderful opportunity to be a driver for Teresa Heinz Kerry, John Kerry and Ted Kennedy when they visited Madison, WI in 2003 and 2004. I know the campaign director and he asked me if I'd like to drive them to events and back again to the local airport. It was just too easy a decision to make.

Getting to be a driver is something that now would be inconceivable with the way security is these days. In order to drive, I had to pass the "Secret Service test" and was cleared to drive.

Driving Teresa and John around was certainly interesting, but that's another set of stories. Both were fantastic people who obviously were very busy getting ready for the various events that occurred.

What was amazing about driving Ted Kennedy around goes back to when I was a kid and wrote to him about how to run for office and how to do what he does. I must have been 8 years old when I wrote to him and I got back a letter signed by him that I framed and still have to this day.

So when I saw Ted get off the Kerry campaign plane and hit the tarmac and wave to well-wishers, it was pretty exciting to see. It was a cold, blustery day and his trademark grey hair was flopping in the arctic wind, but he never stopped his cheery laugh and smile.

Finally, he and his entourage made it to the van and he got in the back behind me. He tapped me on the shoulder and asked me how I was doing in his classic Kennedy accent. I told him it was an honor to drive him around, having been a big fan for many years. What was great about his manner was that we were told never to talk to the people we were driving unless they wanted to, and he certainly did. To hear the man laugh and talk nicely with his staff and be nice to me showed he had a lot of character.

He talked about how he had campaigned for his brother John in 1960 in Wisconsin and wanted to know about where the Black Hawk Ski Club was in relation to the airport. It's an old classic dinner club nearby Madison that he would go to since his sister, Rosemary, had been in Jefferson, Wisconsin after her tragic operation as a child. I had been there once and told him it's at least 45 minutes away. The schedule was too busy to pay a visit, but he reminisced about all the good times he had there.

His entourage were on cell phones talking away, yet he continued to talk about the campaign and how it was going. I told him about doing volunteer work and having had seen him several times in Iowa before Kerry won that race. He was amazed at how that had worked out.

We went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison where Ted was going to get the Kerry fans and anyone else ready to get out the vote. He was fiery, humorous and a big hit with the crowd. There is something about seeing a Kennedy speak at a political event. You walk away excited and ready to get to work for the campaign. Ted did that and more with the crowd.

Once he signed autographs and talked with those many people who wanted to just shake his hand, it was off again back to the airport.

You just have to love the guy when you see him. He has one hell of a handshake. After driving he and the entourage back to the airport, we posed for a photo and he was off again on to the plane.

We all watched the plane fade away in the winter winds and I felt blessed to have such a close encounter with such a legend.

I wish him all the best in his next battle and know he's going to give it his all.

Godspeed, Uncle Teddy.

Apparently, being John Kerry and Ted Kennedy's personal driver wasn't worth mentioning in 2004.  By the rate of this Bouncy's growth, he'll be counseling Obama on Transportation issues within the year.

Cool story from zulu. I can really appreciate it as I drove Hank Williams, Sr., Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley around a couple of weeks ago. They were doing a gig together and for a couple of days we got to hang out together. They're all pretty cool. One day Elvis said that his main thing was to TCB, but he needed a laugh. He wanted to find a comedy club or something. After thinking about it a few minutes I told him that we didn't need a comedy club. I explained that all we needed was an internet connection. He was skeptical at first, but when I loaded the DU website the belly laughs began. Buddy was laughing so hard one time that Coke was shooting from his nose like a water cannon. Elvis said he used to have an old hound dog once that received brain damage after getting ran over by a tractor. He swore that the hound dog had a higher IQ than the culumative total IQ of the DUmp.

Hank Williams, Sr. was not impressed at all. He claims that DU is a parody site (and not a very good one) along the lines of the Onion. I asked him what led him come to that conclusion. He said that coming up he played in a lot of bars so he's seen a lot of people. He's seen drunk people, stoned people, crazy people, etc.; however, he says he's never seen that many people that were that seperated from reality. He didn't think that it was realistically possible to get that much stupid in one place. He figures that it's all got to be people pretending to be stupid trying to get laughs.

H5 Flip, where ya been?

Hi Mr. AllosaursRus. Thanks for asking. I've actually been gone fishing. I penned an open letter to the DUmmies that kind of explains things. I had planned to put it in its own thread, but as it's nothing really earth shattering or DU specific I figure it'll be okay to just stick it below...

Dear DUmmie lurkers,

I wanted to take just a minute of my time to congratulate you and your fellow DimocRatics. Through the course of this great land's history many foes have tried to destroy it. Those foes were powerful and fearsome. The list of foes include, among others, the communist USSR and the combined might of Italy, Hitler's Germany, and the Japanese Empire. Through it all the country stood strong and refused to crumble. It's somewhat amazing that you and your fellow DimocRatics are succeeding where other enemies of America have failed.

Granted, your goal of this land's utter and complete destruction and total subjugation to the rest of the world has not yet come fully to pass; however, your and your fellow DimocRatics destruction of our economy is a strong step toward your ultimate goal of the nation's complete desolation.

As you continue on your quest of obliteration it would be wise to remember that the laws of physics tend to be constant. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. I'm sure that you're now scratching your heads wondering if FlippyDoo has finally flipped. The answer is no, but even a fictional spirit-guide has to eat.

Since you and your fellow DimocRatics destroyed the economy I don't have much spare money in my pockets, and as I said before even a fictional spirit-guide has to eat. In order to put food on the table I have taken up fishing. I am catching, KILLING, and eating fish. Think about that for a second.

Since I'm catching, KILLING, and eating fish because of your and your fellow DimocRatics destruction of the economy the death of each and every fish is on your heads. Just yesterday you were responsible for the death of a 32 quart ice chest full of fish. You wildlife murdering bastards!!!

Also, since I don't want to scratch up my newer vehicle I have to use my older, less environmentally "green" vehicle to go fishing. It's probably eating a hole in the ozone quicker than you DUmmies eating through a super-size bag of Cheetos. As before, since I'm fishing as a result of your and your fellow DimocRatics actions the destruction of the ozone is ultimately your responsibility. You ozone hole creating assholes!!!

Damn, you're murdering fish and the environment. It's almost like you are a bunch of fundie freeper rethugs.

Regardless, congratulations on the murder of all those fish over the last few weeks. Now I've got a fish fry to attend.

By the way DUmmies, I don't know whether your destruction of the ozone has anything to do with it or not, but since I've been murdering fish for you I've been getting quite a tan. The guys in the VRWC Fictional Spirit Guide Corps have started calling me FlippyGold instead of FlippyDoo.

Sincerely,
FlippyDoo
