Nurse Called Out of Surgery, Laid Off

MADISON, Wis.  —  A Dean Health System nurse was called out of surgery so a manager could tell her she was being laid off.

Dean Health says the surgery was minor and the patient wasn't affected, but the manager who summoned the nurse from surgery violated medical protocol.

Dean Health spokesman Paul Pitas says the incident happened at Dean's West Clinic in Madison on Wednesday or Thursday.

The Madison-based health care provider announced Wednesday that it planned to "immediately" lay off 90 employees.

Pitas declined to name the employees involved or what type of surgery the nurse was attending when she was called away.

I suspect a bouncy of sorts, or we are missing a LOT of information.  Hospitals all over the country are screaming for more nurses.  This just doesn't add up.

From what I've heard, all professons are being affected.

As for the OP, it's not like it's "Burger King" where you can force somebody off the clock with no real damage. They should have waited.
Happy Upcoming July 4th. Our country is still one of the best in the world.

Something is  odd, that's for sure.  Both of the local hospitals here have been offering signing/retention bonuses for nurses. This has been the case for the last 2-3 years.

My first thought upon hearing this story: wouldn't it be ironic if the manager got laid off because he did this?

I would think the manager would be fired.

The hospitals, med clinics, nursing homes are crying for help here.

The fact that they are laying off 90 people indicates to me that it is probably for financial reasons.

They also might be laying off their own people and replacing them with temps. Saves quite a bit money getting away health insurance, 401k's, WC and liability insurance.
