The arrest of the two women come as tensions rise over North Korean plans to test-fire a long-range missile in defiance of UN resolutions. They threaten to deepen tensions between the US and North Korea at a time when relations on the Korean peninsular are at their lowest ebb for almost a decade.
The reporters were named as Laura Ling and Euna Kim, both Korean-Americans working for a Californian-based online media outlet Current TV, according to reports on South Korean television station YTN.
They were reportedly taking footage for a despatch on North Korean refugees who flee their homeland's porous northern border for the relative safety of China.
YTN quoted a South Korean government official as saying North Korean guards crossed the border into Chinese territory to arrest the pair on Tuesday after they ignored warnings to stop filming.
Officials in Washington said they had "expressed concern" over the arrests to the government in Pyongyang and were now working with Chinese officials to ascertain the whereabouts of the two reporters.
