The American Legion Strongly Opposed to President's Plan to Charge Wounded Heroes for Treatment

WASHINGTON, March 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The leader of the nation's largest veterans organization says he is "deeply disappointed and concerned" after a meeting with President Obama today to discuss a proposal to force private insurance companies to pay for the treatment of military veterans who have suffered service-connected disabilities and injuries. The Obama administration recently revealed a plan to require private insurance carriers to reimburse the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in such cases.

"It became apparent during our discussion today that the President intends to move forward with this unreasonable plan," said Commander David K. Rehbein of The American Legion. "He says he is looking to generate $540-million by this method, but refused to hear arguments about the moral and government-avowed obligations that would be compromised by it."

The Commander, clearly angered as he emerged from the session said, "This reimbursement plan would be inconsistent with the mandate ' to care for him who shall have borne the battle' given that the United States government sent members of the armed forces into harm's way, and not private insurance companies. I say again that The American Legion does not and will not support any plan that seeks to bill a veteran for treatment of a service connected disability at the very agency that was created to treat the unique need of America's veterans!"

To all vets who might have voted for the Obamination:  How's that "hope and change" thing going now?

I like how Mr Post-Partisan "refused to hear arguments about the moral and government-avowed obligations".

Remember: he brought in amputee vet Maj. Tammy Duckworth to head Intergovernmental Office for the VA. She built a political campaign on bashing Bush over veteran treatment. I wonder how she feels about this?

Obama has $900 million for Hamas to refortify Gaza but he wants to milk vets for $540 million of their benes they could use somewhere else.

And how is a wounded vet supposed to get coverage after this goes into effect?
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

I am too enraged by this latest slap to even offer a comment.  Table that.  I'm mortified and angry.  More angry than I have been about any slap in the face before.  This is a line in the sand moment.

As a Veteran and a citizen I am more angry at this than anything else Obama has done. Our Government's provision of health care to wounded Veterans should be sacred, and untouchable by any 2 bit politician.
I think if we are going to tinker with the Constitution, then they should right in that the President has to have served in the Armed forces. Maybe, just maybe, they will learn a little humility toward our Vets. Of course, it didn't work well with Jackass Carter.

In a trillion dollar porkapalooza like the bill that was just passed winkling $540 million out to ensure care for our best and bravest is a matter of budget dust.

This is going to come back and bite them on the shwantz so hard it's not even funny.

And how many vets are going to be stuck in insurance and financial nightmares dealing with what SHOULD have been done FOR them until this is corrected?

Does that stammering jug eared **** and his pack of idiots in the White House have ANY clue how many veterans can, ya'know, VOTE in every election?  The ones that sat the last one out are not going to sit out the next one.

This is appaling.

And I am just as outraged as all of you.  I didn't even know what to type this morning when I first read this.  Speechless.  Is he just stupid or just evil to be doing this?  The Legion says he's not changing his mind, either.  I'm just dumbfounded as to how he thinks this is some kind of good idea with no consequences.
Yes, the vets vote, and so do the ones who love them (like me and mine), and so do the ones who don't know them, but respect them deeply.

I can see this being taken to the streets in my neck of the woods.  We have the 10th Mountain Division here, and every podunk town has its own Am Legion building, where everyone goes.

I can definitely see the AL hooking up with the VFW, DAV, and other vet organizations to combat this thing. Lobbyists will be swarming all over DC.

Of course, that changes nothing.

While this story is a not just a slap in the face to those who served and were wounded in the process, it's to be expected.

The MSM has done a masterful job of turning the overall GWOT into not much more than a mistake of gargantuan proportions, and the sheeple have short memories. While we've not quite returned to the same mood as we saw post-Vietnam, vis a vis the military, it's close. Therefore, the MSM have done its job when Obama can actually come forward and announce that kind of policy.

At least, that's Obama's assessment.

I think he's wrong and he'll pay a price for his mistake. Hopefully, it'll cost him his next election.

Lets not forget who the brain trust behind this is -- retired 4-star general Shinseski.

Is this Shinseki's payback to the troops after they panned his bull$hit idea about the beret?

When this was on the front page of Fox News, there was nothing on CNN and MSNBC. It seems that negative news about Obama isn't fit to post on some websites.

It make matters worse, disabled vets will have a harder time getting work, as who is going to have them on their insurance as it means higher premiums? Their service disabilities can suck up all the benefits of private health care insurers, meaning that there will be little to none left for the families of disabled vets.

Ya, democrats really love our troops.

I read one article that said vets were upset with Bush's cuts in the VA and poor treatment of them. Seeing in 3 years Bush increased VA funding more then Clinton did in 8, I hardly see him getting blamed for cuts.

A summary of the proposed budget says the president wants to increase funding for VA by $25 billion over five years, and bring more than 500,000 eligible veterans of modest income into the VA health care system by 2013.

Obama backs off plan to alter vets' healthcare
By Roxana Tiron

The White House on Wednesday backed off a controversial plan that would have dramatically altered the way the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) handles insurance claims, after veterans groups staged an all-out fight against such a proposal.

President Obama will not pursue a proposal that would have allowed the VA to charge private insurance companies for the treatment of veterans with service- and war-related injuries. The proposal raised the ire of prominent Democrats on the House and Senate Veterans' Affairs panels. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was the first to announce Wednesday afternoon that the president won’t pursue such a proposal.

For the second time in a week, representatives from prominent veterans organizations went to the White House on Wednesday to meet with the White House chief of staff on VA budget issues.

Jim King, the national executive director for American Veterans (AMVETS), said that the meeting with Rahm Emanuel lasted all of 15 minutes and that the health insurance issue was the only topic discussed. The representatives of the 11 veterans organizations told Emanuel they were not willing to back down, and the chief of staff told them that he thought the issue was “off the table,” but that he needed to talk to Obama.

Gutting the proposal is the “right move to make, because it could have caused too many hardships for veterans,” King said.

Guess what, those are only projections, Obama has yet to touch those numbers. How much you want to bet the VA gets less then those numbers.
