Starbucks to introduce instant coffee
« on: February 13, 2009, 01:00:15 PM »
Quote
...The Seattle-based coffee retailer (Nasdaq: SBUX) plans to unveil an instant coffee product next week. In a memo sent to Starbucks employees Thursday, Vivek Varma, Starbucks senior vice president of public affairs, said the product could be in stores by Feb. 18.

Varma said this won’t be your father’s instant coffee. She said Starbucks has developed technology to “absolutely replicate the taste of Starbucks coffee in an instant form.” Starbucks has been working on the project for 20 years, Varma said.

Varma said Starbucks would host an event next week in New York and other cities to introduce the new instant product.

Worldwide, there is a $17 billion market for instant coffee, according to the memo.

The new product was reported in Advertising Age , which said Starbucks planned to roll out a soluble coffee product called Via.

I can't see this being a big seller.

Why not?  It's Starbucks, after all.

Starbucks can probably put dirt into little bags, like tea bags, and sell it.

It's always been my impression people go to Starbucks because it's a status thing, something that's cool, hip, trendy, with it, and not for the coffee.

I can't STAND Charbucks.  I agree with you its success is from marketing not coffee taste.

I also read somewhere else that they are coming out with "value meals" and laying off a lot of people. Of course you can't cross a street without seeing 14 Starbucks.......

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

I hit an auction on Ebay a while back and got 2,000 single serve Folgers instant coffee packets.

I think I'm set for a while, thanks anyways Starbucks. :-)

Starbucks makes good specialty drinks.  Their regular coffee is HORRIBLE!

I'll stick with the triple (or more?) strength instant coffee packets I get in the MREs I take hunting with me.  It tastes better than Starbucks.

Agreed.  I hate paying over $4 for a cup of coffee, so I don't go to Starbucks very often.  When I do it is to treat my wife to one of their specialty drinks.  It's over priced, but she's worth it.

one of the starbucks close to work has said that they no longer serve decaf.  that really pissed off one of my friends, since he drinks half-caf.

I'm not sure if it is a corporate decision, or if the manager just made a bad decision.
