ensho (1000+ posts) Tue Oct-28-08 12:45 PMOriginal message Illinois had a strange and interesting nuke happening http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index.php?smp=&lang=eng Area: USA, State of Illinois, Quad Cities Nuclear Generating Station, CordobaDescription:Operators at Exelon Nuclear’s Quad-Cities Generating Station declared an “unusual event†this morning after an apparent buildup of gases caused an explosion in a vestibule of an outbuilding. Shelly DeVore, plant spokeswoman, said there were no plant personnel in the area when the incident occurred about 3 a.m. There were no injuries or damage to equipment reported, and there was no radiological release. The incident did not impact the plant’s operations. Both units continue to operate at full power. According to Exelon, the outbuilding is located about 100 yards from the power generating part of the plant. It houses a rarely used tank and pump for storing floor drainable from the plant. “We believe there was a buildup of gases in the vestibule area that basically combusted and blew out that area,†DeVore said, adding that there was no actual fire reported. Exelon Nuclear reported the “unusual event,†the lowest of four emergency classifications defined by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, to federal, state and local officials as required. Located five miles north of Cordova, the Quad-Cities Generating Station produces more than 1,700 net megawatts of electricity, enough to power nearly 2 million homes.--------------------------things shouldn't blow up at a nuke plant

wtmusic (1000+ posts) Tue Oct-28-08 12:56 PMResponse to Original message 3. Thousands of "unusual events" are reported every year and it is the result of a well-regulated industry operating the way it should.Worry when you don't see things like this reported.

wtmusic (1000+ posts) Tue Oct-28-08 01:00 PMResponse to Reply #4 5. Why thank you Things blow up at coal plants too, you just never hear about them.
bigtree (1000+ posts) Tue Oct-28-08 01:04 PMResponse to Reply #5 7. well, the disclosures are there to inform us. we should ask questions. I hate these posts which dismiss such questioning out of hand. I'll bet folks living next to this plant are asking questions. I'm not sure that comparing their nuke plant with a coal plant is going to satisfy them. Maybe there's more that will be revealed about the incident. Gases 'building up' at a nuke plant is worrying, even if there is an explanation.

Pigwidgeon (1000+ posts) Tue Oct-28-08 01:06 PMResponse to Original message 8. No radioactive release, no injuries, no damage But it made the news in Hungary! Funny how a different kind of events are never reported. A thousand or more deaths each year. But next to zero news coverage.

TrogL (1000+ posts) Tue Oct-28-08 01:55 PMResponse to Original message 12. Could be paint thinner or some other solvent...washed down a floor drain then fumes ignited by a spark from a pump.

Wow, I'm in central Illinois and get email news alerts from the three local network stations and nothing came from any of them.
Okay, you're accounted for, and I'm heaving a sigh of relief. But I'm worried about Mr. Wiggum, if he vaporized or something.
Highly unlikely, Frank.
