There is a progression. I think, from:
* I don't think that happens, to
* That's just an outlying crazy, to
* Some do that but that isn't my friends, to
* Oh, crap, I'm in the sane minority, to
* I can't be that, to
* Leaving and letting family, friends, and acquaintances know of the change of heart.
The stages don't have solid boundaries, and progressing from one stage to the next takes time and thought. There is significant reluctance, I think, to move to recognition of being in the "sane minority". It's uncomfortably close to admitting, "I've been wrong."
