Oh my.

In case anybody's wondering, Skins's island is slow (in traffic) today, and most of the threads are about the incoming hurricane.

Despite evacuation order, 1,000 remain in Galveston jail

Shit! The computer models I just saw had Galveston totally submerged.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/599776...

GALVESTON — About 1,000 prisoners and a full jail staff remained in the Galveston County Jail on Galveston Island this morning, even as the island began to be battered by the onslaught of Hurricane Ike.

The reason for not evacuating the prisoners is a security issue and cannot be discussed, sheriff's spokesman Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo said.

"The prisoners and their safety and well-being are paramount and it will be handled," Tuttoilmondo said.

Any decision to move the prisoners would be kept secret for security reasons, as happened before Hurricane Rita in 2005, he said.

"We did this during Rita and no one knew until it was absolutely done," Tuttoilmondo said.

The prisoners were in the jail as of 10 a.m. today, leaving little time to transfer them to the mainland. Hurricane-force winds are expected to strike the island later today, making exit across the causeway to the mainland difficult......"

One can understand the DUmmy concern. That jail holds 1000 democrat votes.

Even worse, the Galveston Cemetery holds thousands more.

Send them all to theone1's house.  She will give aids and comfort to them all I am sure. :whatever:

Yes but those votes will always be there.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

God forbid that 1,000 of the scum of the Earth be inconvenienced when the hurricane knocks out the jail's main power.  'Cause that's about the worst I can resonably expect to happen, unless somehow, that the jail was built by the same shuck and jive artists that had responsibility for maintaining Nawlin's levees.  It's probably the most hurricane-proof structure on that entire island.

Actually, they're saying if your on the first or second story in Galveston you'll die when Ike's storm surge fully hits.  It's not just the power going out for a little while.

I suspect that they already had plans to move the prisoners and of course that information wasn't released.

Oh, and I believe those shuck and jive artist maintaining the levees in NOLA were the Army Corps of Engineers.   :whatever:

Nope.

ACE had responsibility for building them.  After they were built, they were turned over to the state and local governments for "operation" and maintenance.  They were maintained with federal money, but the money was signed over to the various and numerous levee boards that oversaw the individual levees under their jurisdiction.

Supposedly the way the boards were set up, they were quite the sweet deal, if you could get on one; and if some of that guv'mint money just happen to get left in your pocket when you went to contract out the levee maintenance, well, it was just part of the costs of doing business, right?

I see.

Regardless, back to the OP I would assume that the city would have moved the prisoners.

No, prisoners are the last priority.  They will be moved quickly and efficiently when everything else has been seen to, and a motorcade can be detailed off with the prison bus convoy.
