What is up with ESPN and cutting jobs?

I get cutting the jobs that are meaningless, but they are literally letting the good sports minded personalities go!

I just hope they don’t hire all the ex-Fox News or Trump administration flunkies to fill those positions! Then they would all become meaningless!

Bidenomics at work, DUmmy!

ESPN used to be appointment television in my teen years (much like MTV) and into my college years and beyond. That's because "Classic" ESPN focused on sports, NOT the personalities and their whack-job leftist opinions. That has shifted dramatically over the past 10-15 years, where the network leans into the opinion realm rather than show highlights. Hell, even Queef Olber-dork was a great sports host because he simply focused on sports and not his opining.

Rarely watch the network unless there is a compelling sporting event on their family of channels that is unavailable elsewhere. Their opinionated yakkers who I guess have taken over the airwaves are more valued than their product, which is sports. Additionally, the network focuses FAR too much on the NBA and NFL and ignores other sports even when major events have occured.

For example, the top story at ESPN.com right now is about the controversial owner of the Washington Redskins/Commanders Dan Snyder and not about last night's all-star game or Wimbledon.

I agree with everything Ralph said. Also, I'll add that the need for ESPN kinda died with everyone having a smart phone. Now if I want to know the score of a game and some brief highlights, I can look it up on the phone and even watch a video or two. These are things ESPN used to exclusively provide in a timely manner that just aren't needed anyone.

But the point is people watch sports to get away from everyday life, politics being the main thing they don't care to hear about. Reasonable people don't want to listen to a bunch of leftists nonsense anyway, and certainly not mixed in with their favorite sports. Had they kept their talk formats to discussing the teams and players and the like, they would have kept more viewers. Start trying to tell me how evil some athletes are because they don't want to wear rainbow colors on their uniform, and normal people are going to tune you right out. ESPN chose poorly and with that comes a cost. Throw in additional competition from NBCSports, Fox Sports, CBS Sports, etc.... well, you could see it coming.

Well, 7 or 10 years ago ESPN presenters decided they just had to condemn Donald Trump and other conservatives. ESPN manglement decided this was a good thing. Their viewers did not. Meanwhile, on the content side, temporary stars like Kaep decided that playing their game, their team, and continually LEARNING their game were quaternary to their egos, their squeeze-of-the-moment, and their falsehood-based causes. Their fans chose differently.

CNN presenters and manglement, and the stars of their content assassinated ESPN's golden-egg-laying goose. And did it at a time when alternatives to ESPN more convenient to users were on the scene.

I am not a sports fan, I can understand watching a game but to sit and listen to a bunch of talking heads spouting endless statistics and having some athletes who can barely make a sentence that makes any sense babbling about handling a ball is a supreme waste of time  :thatsright:

Corgi Races at Emerald Downs...

The Basset Hound heats are even more entertaining, IMHO.  :cheersmate:

Oh, the Ocho. Thanks for the inspiration for a trivia question to ask next week! Just looked it up and I last asked that in 2014 at a different watering hole from where I perform now.

What 2004 comedy movie first referenced a fictional ESPN spinoff channel: ESPN the Ocho?

And on that topic, ESPN Classic had a really weird show in the vein of "Mystery Science Theater" called "Cheap Seats". The hosts would show old video of such random sports-related programs from the 70's and 80's and absolutely ridicule it. They often showed The Wild World of Sports, Putt-Putt golf, professional wrestling, World Series of Poker, and the National Spelling Bee amongst others.

I believe they're available on YouTube.
