I have been pushing for Sarah Palin for two months, but I thought this story would trip her up.

Quote
Sarah Palin poses 'Troopergate' risk to John McCain's US election bid
John McCain has not just taken a risk on the inexperience of Sarah Palin, his choice of running mate in the presidential race.

He is also gambling that an ethics investigation into the Alaska governor does not blow up in her face when the Democrat leading the inquiry delivers his report on Oct 31 - just five days before the election.

What started as a family dispute in the suburbs of Anchorage could yet determine who governs the world's most powerful nation for the next four years as Alaskan politics finds itself as the unprecedented focus of a billion-dollar election battle.

Gov Palin is under investigation for her role in the sacking last month of Walter Monegan, the state's public safety director. Mr Monegan had previously refused to fire Mrs Palin's estranged former brother-in-law, a state trooper who allegedly threatened to shoot her father during a nasty child custody battle with her sister.

Mrs Palin said that Mr Monegan was removed for failing to fill vacancies and welcomed a public examination of her actions. Mr Moneghan said he was put under pressure to sack the state trooper Michael Wooten by Mr Palin's husband Todd and a senior aide.

An internal trooper investigation had found Mr Wooten guilty of several infractions - using a Taser stun gun on his stepson, drinking on duty, threatening his then father-in-law and shooting a moose without a permit, the Anchorage Daily News reported yesterday.

Those events took place when Mrs Palin was mayor of Wasilla, a town of about 7,000 people which is an hour's drive north of Anchorage and a different world from the nation's capital Washington. Nonetheless, Mr McCain's White House hopes could be shaped by the outcome of Alaska's "Troopergate", as the controversy is inevitable known.

The affair has done little to dampen Mrs Palin's popularity rating which stands at a level - 80 per cent - of which governors of the other 49 states can only dream. Not that that translates into many people in the sparsely-populated state: she was elected with a total of just 115,000 votes.

The investigation won't be completed until after the eletion.  The only thing the Dems have to run with is rumors and insinuation.

Mr Palin has a husband named Todd?

Now there is the real story.

Sounds to me like an open and shut case. She's not running from it and told them to bring it on. My money is on the idiot BIL deserving the firing (obvious to anyone with eyes) and this boiling down to the fired public safety director throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the then mayor Palin to exact revenge for his rightful canning.

I'd like to see the MSM and the liberals show as much concern over the Oooooobama's many questionable actions..... :uhsure:

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

So they fire a drunken wife-beater with multiple complaints against him because he's a state trooper and as such would have access to the govenor's security detail; the same govenor that is related to the wife he hates enough to beat.

Am I missing something here?

Is this the fight the idiot liberals want to pick?

if the allegations of domestic abuse are true, he wouldn't be able to carry a weapon (lautneberg amendment and all) so he wouldn't be any use to the troopers.  they'd have had to fire him eventually anyway

You forgot to mention that the  :censored: fired a taser at his 11 y/o step-son.

Jake Style posted something from The American Thinker yesterday that indicated that the whole issue started BEFORE she was Governor and that she didn't know a lot of it was going on.

Read more about it. She went against the entire state GOP organization in running for governor. Some leaders in that orgnization vowed payback against her. In most states, the upper levels of the state police are owned and operated as political fiefdoms by the state's dominant political party. Apparently Alaska is no different.

In the case of this guy, aside from alcohol abuse, domestic violence and death threats, he admitted popping his little stepson with a taser. Someone in the state police saw efforts to get rid of this guy as a way to attack Palin politically, because he was married to her sister. Typical run-of-the-mill political retaliation. Palin claims her administration was doing it, but she had not been personally involved. Then she fired the head of the state police for refusing to hire replacements.

The only question I'd ask is if she was not directly involved in firing the rogue trooper, why not? She certainly should have been trying to protect the people of Alaska from having this guy in a position of authority, carrying a gun. They can't lay a glove on her. They also have to be very careful with allegations of corruption. Remember, take away 140 days in the Senate, and the guy at the top of their ticket is still a professional Chicago race hustler.

MSB, the Lautenberg Amendment also applies to LEOs. I've read of a few that have lost their jobs because of it. Quite honestly, I think the law sucks.

The Lautenberg Amendment applies to anyone with a domestic violence conviction or restraining order.

http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/922(g)(9).html

One of the more repugnant aspects of this law is that it is applied ex post facto as far as I can tell.  Something that I personally believe to be blatantly unconstitutional IAW Article I Sec 9 of the US Contsitution.
