Question for my Fellow Board Members: Internet Hoaxes - Dying Posters

I read this article the other day about a common internet hoax in which the individual claims to be dying. He/she thereby garners sympathy from other interneters, and past transgressions are overlooked in an outpouring of sympathy. In some cases, it is even claimed that the poster has died. But the typical pattern is that the poster will continually to claim to be on death’s bed for three or even four years, all the while laughing at those ignorant enough to believe his/her lies.

I was reminded of a Burt Reynolds from the 70s — I can’t remember the title, but I’m sure that some of our more movie savvy posters can help — in which he pretended to be dying so that he could receive “pity ****s” from Sally Field. Is this a phenomenon anyone here has heard of, and, if so, could you reply?

3 or 4 years? Yep, must be speaking of Omaha Steve, though OS may have started saying he was dying even longer ago than that.

I saw that, but my first clue was the constant use of the word "pity," which as far as I know can be associated only with the big guy.

But whatever else one thinks of Omaha Steve, one has to admit the big guy did nothing whatsoever to warrant this treatment.

Definitely referring to OS, especially the "and past transgressions are overlooked in an outpouring of sympathy" part. On several occasions, OS said some things on Skin's island where his fellow primitives called him out, only for OS to feign that his delicate condition causes uncontrollable outbursts which should be overlooked without comment.

As to why this fool would bring it up anywhere is inexcusable. However, if it is intent to do so anyway, it should at least post this at DU or JPR where poor OS can explain his ailment.
