The Edmund Pettus Bridge carries U.S. Route 80 Business (US 80 Bus.) across the Alabama River in Selma, Alabama. Built in 1940, it is named after Edmund Winston Pettus, a former Confederate brigadier general, U.S. senator, and grand dragon of the Ku Klux Klan. The bridge is a steel through arch bridge with a central span of 250 feet (76 m). Nine large concrete arches support the bridge and roadway on the east side.

The Edmund Pettus Bridge was the site of the conflict of Bloody Sunday on March 7, 1965, when police attacked and brutally beat Civil Rights Movement demonstrators with horses, billy clubs, and tear gas[2] as they were attempting to march to the state capital, Montgomery. The marchers crossed the bridge again on March 21 and successfully walked to the Capitol building.

The bridge was declared a National Historic Landmark on February 27, 2013.

That's not a bad idea... Why didn't Barry rename it to the Martin Luther King Jr. bridge?

Even from Lewis' W'pedia bio I can see that Lewis was a Race Card player and Race-Baiter for political profit. But I know West Virginia has lots of structures named for a KKK recruiter that, so the name of racist Robert Byrd could be replaced with the name racist John Lewis.

I'm sorry for Lewis' family's loss. The above is as far as I'll go in speaking ill - even with facts - of the dead.

He was a hero for taking a brick to the head 50 years ago but once he got to Washington he turned into just another partisan hack.

California congressman Duke Cunningham was a hero 50 years ago too but you don't hear people going on and on about him.
