I just cancelled my digital subscription to the NY Times

Their recent sloppiness regarding Kavanaugh pushed me over the edge.

I've been reading the Times daily (and usually attempting the crossword puzzle) since the mid-1970s. The paper has become a disappointment editorially and in their reporting. The Judith Miller/Iraq War fiasco was the beginning of my disgust but this latest episode pushed me over the edge.

In order to cancel a digital subscription, one has to engage in an online chat with one of the paper's "advocates." After reading my complaints, "Ashley" told me that my views would be expressed to the management however if I continued my subscription, they would give me a substantial discount on its cost.

In other words, it's all transactional.

Thanks, but no thanks was my reply.

Frankly, I'm saddened because I've always felt the NYT was a gold standard. Turns out it's fools gold.

Several good responses.

I don't know which are more :rotf: , the ones who suddenly realized the journalistic malpractice, as if it were only recent, :rotf: , or the ones who posted, "What sloppiness?" :lmao: And then there's lindysalsagal's post, :lmao:  :lmao: .

Nope. Just turns out you are gullible and stupid.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

During Reagan the NYT suffered a drastic readership-loss to the point where they were pushing a banal sort-of 'weekend only' offer.  I wasn't paying attention to when and how they recovered.  Suddenly, in the mid-90's, the readers were somewhat back.

But if you start seeing NYT-ads on television and other news-sites, you know they're scraping the bottom again.

Calling it "sloppiness" is giving the NYT the benefit of the doubt.
