A visit from hotel security in Las Vegas:
A number of years ago, I was in Las Vegas for COMDEX, the huge computer industry convention. My wife and I had checked into an affordable (very cheap) casino/hotel not too far from the Convention Center. We were freelance journalists for computer magazines, so it was an annual trip that gave us a chance to visit with other journalists and our editors. We weren't earning all that much, so we had to pinch pennies on those trips.

That particular year, my side business of selling mineral specimens to collectors had taken me to a mineral show in Southern California the day before we checked in to the hotel. I had my car filled with flats (18" x 24" x 4-6" boxes) of specimens I had purchased at the show, so after checking in, I got my heavy-duty luggage cart and moved them into the hotel room to keep them from getting stolen from the car. There were about 60 of those boxes. They took up quite a bit of space, actually.

The next morning, we did our mingling and other business at COMDEX, and then returned to the room before heading out to press events scattered around on the Strip. Free food, free drinks and more hobnobbing with our peers. However, before we could leave, there was a heavy knock on the door of our hotel room. "Hotel Security!" I heard when I asked who was there.

So, I opened the door, to find a couple of armed security guards who were very interested in what was in all of those boxes. I opened a couple of them and showed them and explained the innocuous contents, and they went on their way. They said that housekeeping service had reported those suspicious boxes and they needed to check them out.

No big deal, but there was, apparently, active security at that hotel. I had some unusual stuff in my room, so it got checked out. It makes me wonder about security at that Mandalay Bay hotel/casino. Was nobody curious? I might have been.

Hey Rockhead, just a suggestion for you.  Two things:  1. Don't keep weird stuff in your room, 2.  If you can't control yourself and need weird stuff, put out your "Do Not Disturb" sign.

Rockhead has likely never been inside the check-in lobby of a modern upscale Vegas hotel.  Usually, it is SUPER busy!  I'm not even remotely surprised Mr. Paddock had very little attention drawn to his accoutrements, nobody really gives a sh*t.

For all his verbosity that was something I've wondered about from the time I heard that 8-12 guns had been found in his room. Now we know it was about 20 long guns plus 2 or 3 handguns. Add in God knows how many thousands of rounds of ammo, and yeah. Even done over 3 or 4 days, just how in Hades did he manage to bring in so much bulky and heavy stuff without getting any attention from hotel security? Nor catch the attention of housekeeping staff (even a couple of days of requesting no cleaning should have gotten some attention)?

Mineralman, if you hadn't been so conspicuous stealing plates of food and bottles of alcohol from the buffet, you wouldn't have been bothered by security. :mental: :thatsright:

I don't think so, SVP.  Numerous and varying types of cases are common in Vegas due to the constant stream of trade shows.   Would you pay any special attention to this?

How about this one?

Regarding the maid service - good point, but again, I don't think so.  My wife and I spend A LOT of time in Vegas* and other casinos, we almost never get our room serviced during our stays.  I also tend to see more room doors with "Do Not Disturb" placards in place than not, so we're not the only ones.

Heard this in multiple places, as well as my own trips to Vegas.  When I've been, normally tote golf clubs in a heavy cover travel bag.  Media, musicians likely store their equipment in the rooms/suites for safety.  Better than the parking lots.  Never once has anyone searched my bags upon entry.

Nice distraction, Rockhead. :whatever:

Thanks, Mav. Didn't think about conventions and equipment.
