San Fran to fine people 1000 bucks for not recycling

(07-31) 20:17 PDT -- Garbage collectors would inspect San Francisco residents' trash to make sure pizza crusts aren't mixed in with chip bags or wine bottles under a proposal by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

And if residents or businesses don't separate the coffee grounds from the newspapers, they would face fines of up to $1,000 and eventually could have their garbage service stopped.

(snip)

"We are concerned about draft provisions that envision our drivers policing the contents of refuse containers and possibly withholding service if violations were found," Reed said. "A significant increase in time required to service each customer location would mean we would need to have more routes, which means more drivers, trucks, fuel and related resources."

(snip) from the almost 1000 comments section:

"I tried with the little green bucket they gave me. Flies the first day. So I bought a better one, so I didn't have to take it down every night. What a mess. Then I had to take it to the back yard and wash it out every day. Take it out every day, and then to the back yard to wash it out every night. I live on the second floor and am retired. I don't go out every day. I have to go out for this? I put out a bag of garbage about once every two and a half weeks or so. I recycle everything else. Must I stop eating fruit and vegetables so I don't have to wash this thing every day? This is nuts! I won't do it, and neither will most of the people in the building. What about all the old people with their own garbage cans, are you going to fine them for not bringing down their scraps every night? We will take to the streets. You can't arrest us all. How will that look on the nation's front pages and on the TV? Hey Mayor, fix this!"

"Seriously...does Gavin really have nothing ELSE to worry about? Shouldn't he be lounging in his private jet using his new iPhone 3G and its wireless internet to purchase carbon offsets while flying to his next honeymoon destination with his new bride??"

"Oh great idea. Let's deny trash service to those who do not properly sort their trash. Then they'll just toss it out in the street. BRILLIANT solution, there, Gavin! I mean, you know, we're not in Beijing."

"I am sure that EVERYTHING was properly recyled from the Sat Newsom wedding."

:lmao:  the comments are priceless... looks like the san frans arent happy

Great, this goes along with the MUNI with wi-fi that can't even run on time. Each night by bus stop smells like urine, I have homeless drunks walking into my place of business carrying knives and even street I walk down is dirtier than the next. All I can say is thank God, is that PC for SF, we don't have plastic bags or chain stores anymore. Whew, I feel much better. Hey Mayor Newsome and the rest of the SF Stupidvisors, give your citizens the basic need to live in a civilized society and then tackle saving the world from Goreaphobia.

My sister-in-law lives in an upscale neighborhood in Gilbert AZ outside of Phoenix and the woman president of the HOA would actually go through garbage cans at night to see if people were recyling the proper things and not throwing recyclables in with the trash. She would then leave a note on their doors basically grading their garbage. She stopped when someone called the cops one night claiming a burglar was roaming the neighborhood and the cops came across her in a hazmat suit. If Gavin wants to be the first to man the inspection line then he can pass his law otherwise he should keep his nose out of people's trash and focus on the hundreds prowling around peoples' homes during the night raiding their trash and often leaving a lot of mess behind. There are so many other issues within SF that Gavin needs to direct his good intentions towards like the filthy streets, vagrants, the urine smell on any corner, graffiti, gangs, crime, and leave the garbage alone.

The only thing I can come up with is that Newsom along with this self serving, special interest pandering BoStupidvisors, has a big jar sitting in a special room in City Hall. Whenever there is a serious issue that faces the City, say a stabbing death of a 14 year old walking down the street, or lets say the continuing failure of Muni. They all gather around this big jar, reach in and pull out a slip of paper on which is written, the most idiotic, pandering, far removed from reality, obviously transparent piece of legislation meant to distract the citizens from the real issues. WTH? In this one three day period alone, we have the most UNIMPORTANT and infuriating proposals (force business to pay for commute, no cigs at drug stores, garbage sorting) to add to the already overflowing steaming heap of dung sitting in the middle of City Hall (hide your bins, prison summer camp, homeless meters). If you're interested in sorting trash, you may want to start with our city government this Nov!

Hey neighbor, I don't like you and now I know how to get you--I'll put the wrong recycling in the wrong bins outside your house. Then you'll get a nice big fine. And if I don't have room in my can, I'll put my trash in yours. And you'll pay. I know what I'm talking about. My European relatives have a similar nutty situation and they virtually have to guard their trash when they put it out or someone else will dump stuff in it. Newsome, try education, try making it easier to seperate trash for people who live in small apartments. If you can forgive illegal thugs, you can work with the citizens on seperating trash AFTER it's collected. EUREKA! I just got an idea. Let all the illegals you've given sanctuary, seperate the trash while they're serving time for their law-breaking. Problem solved.

jeebus... San Fran sounds like an amazing town..

Can't we, as a Legal & law-abiding San Francisco citizens do a collective action to stop this idiotic mayor from making our lives miserable? I've lived here for almost 30 years now and I have never experienced this much hassle from the Mayor until Newsome was put on the HOT seat for helping ILLEGAL youths! And, to add to this, how does everyone feel about the new "Health Tax" that is added on top of the 8.50% city tax we pay in restaurants?

wow... hadnt heard about that one..

Stop collecting my garbage - when I have been religious about paying for the service - and I'll just go back to the age old custom of dumping my shit in the middle of the street.  I'd probably go so far as to do it in front of City Hall.

**** you and your little fiefdoms!

The least effective way to recycle is to do it one person at a time. The most efficient is to build an automated plant that seperates mechanically. Naturally, Newsome goes for the least efficient.  :banghead:

I have said this before -- next up, cameras in your bedroom to make sure the only sex you practice is gay sex.  Straight sex will be fined and the Missionary Position double-fined.

Hey you stupid SF fudge-packers elected these guys because they respect your privacy.  Good job, yes?

But you can't go to sleep every night knowing you have POWER OVER INDIVIDUALS if you do that in a plant now can you?

Not all SF lust is for some dude's poop chute.

my in laws live in Canada and there, they do it that way. they actually hire the handicapped to sort the trash that comes in and those guys and gals are sticklers for making sure it gets done properly. they also get paid a pretty good wage and are able to live indepenantly - its a win win for everyone.

i didnt make it through all 900+ comments on that article, but Newsome sounds like he wants to be Nanny Pelosi when he grows up.
