The president’s chief of staff is pushing for stricter border controls,
comparing America’s southern neighbor to Venezuela.
White House Chief of Staff John Kelly is urging President Trump to push for stronger border security measures
in his DACA negotiations with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), due to what Kelly sees as
an impending economic collapse in Mexico, according to a New York Times report.
Kelly has warned that
Mexico could go the way of Venezuela, collapsing economically and being unable to care for its people.
Trump invited Kelly into a meeting with Schumer, where Kelly made the argument:
Mr. Kelly launched into a passionate call for stouter border defenses, including his general support for a beefed-up barrier, offering a remarkably pessimistic view of
Mexico’s security situation and political stability.
He likened Mexico, one of the United States’ most important trading and law enforcement partners, to Venezuela under the regime of Hugo Chávez, the former leader, suggesting
it was on the verge of a collapse that would have repercussions in the United States, according to two people who attended the meeting.
If Kelly’s predictions are correct, Trump’s border security measures could become crucial in preventing a refugee and migrant crisis once Mexico falls apart.
