The White House published what they claim is Donald Trump’s 2005 tax information minutes before Rachel Maddow aired it on her show Tuesday night.

Speaking on background, a White House official said, “You know you are desperate for ratings when you are willing to violate the law to push a story about two pages of tax returns from over a decade ago.”

MAJOR FAIL: Watch Rachel Maddow Flail Explaining Trump Paid Millions in Taxes

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow boasted to her millions of Twitter followers that she was releasing Trump’s 1040 tax form from 2005.

Instead of dropping a bombshell that Trump somehow magically doesn’t pay taxes like every liberal believes, she ended up proving he pays millions, $38 million in 2005 to be exact.

Epic Fail: Rachel Maddow Mocked After Dragging Out Trump Tax ‘Scoop’

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow was widely mocked on social media Tuesday night after drawing out the revelations in what she announced was an “exclusive story” regarding Donald Trump’s tax returns.

Instead of getting right to her big scoop about a 2005 Trump tax return she obtained, Maddow opened her show with a rambling 20-minute rant outlining her often tangential theories regarding Trump’s connections to Russia.

Maddow did not unveil the relevant tax documents until 23 minutes into the show, revealing that Donald Trump had made more than $150 million in income in 2005 and paid $38 million in income taxes that year.

‘CLIENT COPY’: Did Donald Trump leak his own 2005 tax return?

Was Rachel Maddow’s mega hyped nothing burger actually leaked by the person she thought she was exposing?

After a nearly 20-minute rambling monologue about Donald Trump’s income and taxes, Maddow held up two pages of what she claimed was Trump’s federal tax return from 2005.

As she held the pages up to the camera, “Client Copy” was clearly visible, suggesting the copies came not from within the IRS, but from the taxpayer himself.

Here are the two pages the network showed:

Here’s a closer look of what MSNBC aired on screen:

Who else would have access to a “client copy” of Trump’s tax returns, except Donald Trump?

David Cay Johnston, who claimed he received the two pages in the mail, speculated during an appearance on Maddow’s program that Trump very well may have mailed them himself.

Did the Trump-obsessed media get punked again?

Trump Tweet Casts Doubt on 2005 Tax Return

President Donald Trump cast doubt on the release Tuesday night of parts of his 2005 tax return, in a Wednesday morning post on Twitter:

Does anybody really believe that a reporter, who nobody ever heard of, "went to his mailbox" and found my tax returns? @NBCNews FAKE NEWS!
    — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 15, 2017

The White House acknowledged that the 2005 return was genuine.

Journalist David Kay Johnston received the return in the mail. He suggested that it is possible Trump leaked it himself.

Commentators both Republican and Democrat criticized Maddow for the release, saying it contained nothing of note. Howie Carr called it a "nothing burger."

Rachel Maddow Turned a Scoop on Donald Trump’s Taxes Into a Cynical, Self-Defeating Spectacle

At 7:36 p.m. Tuesday night, Rachel Maddow tweeted “BREAKING: We've got Trump tax returns. Tonight, 9pm ET. MSNBC. (Seriously),” sending the internet into a frenzy of theorizing. Did Maddow have Donald Trump’s tax returns or just one of the Trumps’ tax returns? Could this be it, the tax return that would bring down the Donald? If this was it, why wasn't MSNBC cutting into its programming, instead of running a countdown clock to Maddow’s show? By 8:24, Maddow was tweeting that the tax return in question was Donald Trump’s 1040 from 2005. By 8:30, still half an hour before Maddow started airing, the White House had responded to the MSNBC report, saying that Trump had paid $38 million on income of $150 million that year. An hour later, about 20 minutes after The Rachel Maddow Show started, Maddow would confirm these numbers, turning her big scoop about Donald Trump’s long-missing tax returns into a cautionary tale about overhype. Rachel Maddow, you played yourself—and us too.

In positioning it as a grand revelation, a vital step in comprehending Trump’s corruption, MSNBC created an exceedingly cynical spectacle. By playing into the network’s loyal liberal audience’s fantasy that there exists a Trump silver bullet, it instead delivered Trump a positive news cycle—the guy pays taxes! Who knew!—amidst the debacle of the AHCA, along with more evidence that the media is aligned against him.

He paid at a higher rate than Bernie, but Berne ripped him during the election for paying no taxes.

Via Twitchy:

With all the talk of President Trump and his 2005 tax return, let’s put what he paid in perspective, shall we?

Trump in 2005 paid a higher tax rate than President Obama and Sen. Bernie Sanders in 2015 and 2014 respectively, as well as a higher percentage than Comcast’s average tax rate. Comcast being the parent company of nothingburger journalist Rachel Maddow’s employer, MSNBC:

Gotta love the progression, from heights of desire to crashing of hopes. Tears be sweet…
