You know, when I was green and young, an old man told me to never tell anyone "I want a job."

Instead, he advised I say "I want work."

Being an agreeable and compliant young lad, I took his advice, and it served me well to the end of my laboring days.

The job search.

So, until recently a bad back was preventing me from returning to work.  It seems (and I am keeping my fingers crossed) that it is getting better on it’s own.  Haven’t pulled it out in over a month and am feeling pretty good overall. 

I recently moved into an apartment in town with my younger sister, and we’re both looking for work (our brother in law is holding off on the rent until we’re employed).  I’m 32 and have done a lot of different things.  Telemarketing, dish-washing, minor carpentry (mostly as a gopher), radio programming (kept a station’s programming running all by myself for several months, for far less money than it was worth), sales, some retail, hospitality.  Even worked for the Census bureau back in 2010. 

So, experience isn’t really a problem.  The problem seems to be the search itself.  A lot of the jobs I’m applying for seem to only offer applications online.  I’ve been out of work for over a year so I suspect some employers are wary of the gap in my work history.

Recently I’ve started looking online.  I finally have decent internet and a cell phone that works, but employers aren’t really biting.  The other problem is that the most decent looking job sites seem to require payment (flexjobs, for example) and I am terrible at resume writing.  I was wondering if anyone who has done this before might have some advice.  I’m filling out apps for various jobs in town, but I’d love it if I could find something to do from home.  I’m not a bad writer, could do some freelancing maybe – but only have a year of college and a GED (no degree).

Figured this would be a good place to ask, I know a lot of you are into different kinds of work and probably know the market way better than I do.  Would appreciate any advice.

Most states have offices that list job openings and maintain lists of employers in your area.

Wonder why they look for a job now and not under O....

Out of work for over a year...what cha been doing dude?

Please make sure your facebook page shows your political beliefs...

Employers now check that to see if you are a compliment to their work place....

It helps to weed out all those trouble makers....

Looks like he is a jack of all trades and master of none.....maybe one of the lefty companies will hire him.

Trust me kid, experience is a HUGE problem.  You have worked no job consistently and haven't worked in a coherent series of positions that relate to one thing.  None of the jobs you list require any particular talents or skills.

Present that resume and you MIGHT get a job at McDonald's or Wendy's. 

By 32 most normal people have a career that includes working from the bottom up and learning skills as they go, such as going from cash register to supervisor to assistant manager, etc. or apprentice to journeyman, etc.

Based on that CV, I wouldn't hire you even when I was just hiring counter people.

You are just a drifter with no ambition and no skills.  Look at your life now kid -- it is how it will look when you are 75 (if you live that long).

I used the State of California's job search website back in 2002. It was a godawful clunky POS! Monster.com was/is vastly better. Either TAT's state does better than does CA, or (s)he isn't very experienced in searching for jobs.
