The left is having a tough time dealing with the end of Barack Obama’s presidency, commemorating it with gushing articles and public displays of mourning. Yet, despite their attempts to whitewash his record,
Obama will go down as one of the worst records on civil liberties in American history.
Obama’s record on civil liberties was absolutely terrible, arguably worse than President Bush.
The most abhorrent example was in 2014 when
Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act, allowing the government to arrest and indefinitely detain U.S. citizens without trial. When the President first re-authorized the law in 2014, liberals hoped that he would move forward with closing Guantanamo but by 2016, it became obvious that would never happen.
Along with indefinite detention, the Obama Administration
expanded efforts to spy on the activities of all Americans. Even towards the end of his second term, The New York Times reported that the National Security Agency was expanding the amount of intelligence they were willing to share with other departments
without a warrant.
Whistleblowers who documented and released information about government abuses were
the biggest targets under the Obama Presidency. In fact the 44th President
prosecuted more whistleblowers than all other presidents combined.
Despite campaigning against George W. Bush’s record on drone wars, Guantanamo Bay, and The Patriot Act, Obama continued to all those government programs.
More than 2,500 people have been killed by drone strikes under the 44th President, including more than 300 civilians.
It’s so ironic that the same left-wing journalists who screamed about civil liberties during the Bush Administration have already forgotten about President Obama’s actions over the last eight years.
