Ever since the election, Liberals in California have been talking about seceding from the union.

There are lots of reasons why that won’t happen, but the biggest one is economics.

One of California’s biggest economic problems is public pensions.

The situation has reached a crisis point.

From FOX Business:

CalPERS Cuts Pension Benefits For First Time

The unthinkable just happened in Loyalton, California, a small remote city nestled high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

For the first time in its 85-year history, the California Public Employees Retirement System, CalPERS, is drastically cutting benefits for public retirees. Starting January 1st, four retired City of Loyalton public employees will have their pensions cut 60 percent. For 71-year-old Patsy Jardin, that means her pension will drop from about $49,000 a year to a little more than $19,000.

In an interview with the FOX Business Network, Patsy asked, “How am I going to make it now? What am I going to do?”

Fellow Loyalton retiree John Cussins is asking the same question since his pension will also drop 60 percent, to $1,523 a month.

Here’s a related video report:

As long as towns and cities in California can’t pay their bills, the state won’t be seceding from the union.

Liberals can dream all they want, but secession isn’t happening!

So you're saying that we're on the hook for their spending? If that's true, they need to leave the union now.

California and Illinois have both talked about asking the feds to bail out their pension plans.

Speaking as a native Californian who has lived here all but 6 years of my more than 6 decades, write your Congress-Critters demanding that they vote against any bail-out of California. There is zero chance CA pols, government union members, and Lib/Prog voters will learn anything unless this financial house of cards comes crashing down around their ears.

The public union pensions are why Illinois is in such trouble. Yet SEIU is demanding no changes to pensions, not even for future retirees, and they want over 11% pay raises spread over a couple of years. They  want taxes raised even though their pay and benefits are way above the average taxpayer in Illinois.

Similar union greed here in CA. Basically cities, counties, school districts, etc. have paid off the wage demands by not making adequate contributions to the pension funds (and the pension fund managers have, to a large degree, enabled this fraud by inflating ROI estimates). If this house of cards is bailed out by the Feds, the fraud will continue.

Definitely agree that the rest of the country shouldn't have to bear the burden of an out-of-control spending lefty legislature that's been that way for decades now, but I'm under no illusions.

Somehow that phrase, "Too big to fail" keeps ringing in my ears.  :whatever:

The only way I would accept any bail out happening is if it involved an immediate cancellation of future pensions, removal from office of all state elected officials, permanent decertification of all public employee unions, and criminal investigations for fraud and Ponzi schemes for all involved. Since I know that won't happen, I feel safe.

This is a major factor.  They can basically pull any number out of their ass and get away with it.

Throw in barring the canned elected officials from ever working for government at any level - elected, appointed, or hired - and imprisoning the fiduciary oversight people, with a similar bar from working for government and in any part of the financial industry, and I'd consider that. The part about, "an immediate cancellation of future pensions," would require an amendment to the state constitution, BTW.

Something like all that might emerge from the rubble, but I have zero confidence CA pols will do the work to prevent the collapse. And trying to fix it by ballot initiative would be wa-a-a-a-aa-aaay too complex (and the ability of the Governor, AG, and legislature to kill an initiative passed by voters be refusing to defend it in court - as was done with Propositions 187 and 8 - would need to be taken away).

Can, and have. If the situation in Loyalton mentioned in the OP id the one I think it is, the pension fund oversight people basically could no longer keep up their vastly unrealistic ROI estimates - too many years of falling way short was bringing on a liquidity crisis - and required various government bodies to increase greatly their pension contributions. Loyalton couldn't and didn't, thus the pension slashes (the local economy has probably been impacted badly by enviroregs shutting down industries like mining and forestry ... just guessing, based on Loyalton being a town in the Sierras). I'm sure Loyalton is the point of the tip of the hugenormous iceberg.

Not everyone in California wants to secede. California is largely a liberal states because of San Francisco and Los Angeles area. It is more like a purple state like New York, Illinois, Oregon, and Washington. They are only blue because of the big cities in those states. Rest of California is very conservative.
