My Worst Fears During the Campaign Have Come to Pass
 
I really can't remember how many times I wrote thread-starting posts about GOTV before and during the general election campaign. One thing they all had in common was an expression of the danger of allowing the federal government to fall under the complete control of the Republicans. I tried to encourage everyone to work as hard as possible to make sure that our Democratic nominee won, because the prospect of all three branches of federal government in the hands of right-wingers was so horrifying.

Now, due to many factors, including people voting for third party candidates or skipping the presidential race on their ballots in some key states, exactly that has now occurred. The White House will be occupied by an orange-haired nitwit with no idea of what being President requires. The House and the Senate will also have Republican majorities. I had hopes that we'd be able to regain a majority in the Senate, but that did not happen, for many of the same reasons that the Democratic nominee did not win.

Worst of all, the new administration arrives on January 20 with a vacancy on the Supreme Court. Trump will, no doubt, name a conservative to fill that seat and the Republican Senate will swiftly confirm his choice. That will be the final straw in our national house built of straw. With a SCOTUS majority of conservatives, and the prospect of additional conservative justices to fill upcoming vacancies, we will have lost the last measure of checks and balances in our government.

There is an enormous risk going forward of a rapid backsliding to the United States of the 1950s and 1960s. Those were the times of my youth, and I remember with painful clarity how bad things were for minorities, women and others without inborn privilege. We could easily see the cumulative progressive changes of the last 50-60 years disappear. This prospect is one of the most frustrating and fear-producing things I have witnessed in my 71 years on this planet.

What can we do? I'm at a loss to say. We had a chance to continue the progress, but blew it badly through Democratic Party infighting and a refusal to recognize what a Republican sweep of all three branches of government might mean. Other factors, like voter suppression could have been overcome in the crucial swing states if we had not pissed away our chances through inaction or stubborn adherence to factionalism withing our Democratic Party.

I'm done with this rant now. However, I could not avoid writing it. I'm so sorry we failed. I apologize to everyone who will be harmed by a totally conservative federal government. We have let people down, people who have no resources adequate to compensate for the damage. By focusing on nitpicking, we have failed so many people. It's too damned bad, in my opinion, and didn't have to end the way it did. Ugh!

Did you give up? Don't. Go on Tuesday and vote. There will be many more polling places and plenty of time to cast your vote.

Go early. Best time is between 10 AM and 4 PM. Early mornings and afternoon rush hours are the busiest.

Don't let the Republicans stop you from voting by closing down early voting locations. Go to your local Election Day polling place and make your voice heard

I believe, after tomorrow's election. I think their sampling is no longer valid. Demographically, it is not measuring things as well as they might think.

Tomorrow, after all the votes are counted, I believe we're going to discover that from 3-4% of the Clinton vote was not accounted for in the aggregate of polling. Where that missed vote comes from isn't completely clear, but I think we'll see it reflected in the results in most states, if not all.

Hispanics, for example, appear to be under-sampled. I also believe that there is an poorly sampled set of women who are nominally Republican.

In 2016, the dynamics of the electorate have changed, I think. Those changes were not fully anticipated and the accuracy of polling is probably not what it should be.

Will I be right? I think so.

Economic markets will rise sharply. In the highest levels of government everywhere, leaders will be able to release months of tension. Women in the US and around the world will gain new hope. Immigrants and would-be immigrants to the United States will resume their plans and dreams.

The only places that will not celebrate are Russia and whatever dark basements where Trump supporters are lurking. And polling companies will have to start redesigning their methodologies.

thinks he/she's being even more clever by posting about me and my posts on DU by using my meatspace name in his postings. I think that's pretty amusing, since I include a link in my signature line on DU that leads anyone who wants to click it to that information. I gave up pretending that I was anonymous on the internet many years ago. I used to have another link in my signature line that did the same thing, but dropped that link because someone accused me of advertising my tiny little web content business.

It's a losing battle, trying to maintain anonymity, if you're active online. So, I stopped pretending long ago. I use the name MineralMan on DU because screen names are a standard sort of thing here. I've used it on every political website I've joined for many years. But, I'm not anonymous, nor do I pretend to be. I'm not anonymous in any way, nor do I care about such things.

So, posting my name somewhere isn't some sort of subtle threat nor does it reveal some sort of secret knowledge. Anyone who thinks so is just silly. Someone told me in a private message about this. I simply laughed. It's meaningless.

So, laughing at me is just fine. I might turn it around from time to time. As for the other actions taken by some at that place, they are abhorrent. Perhaps they are not as anonymous as they think they are, either. Who can say, you know?

I do find it interesting that you referred to my use of the same screen name at other sites in a "hinting" way. What was the point of that, really? As you know, I make no secret of that either.
