I'll try to use small words and sentences so you can stay with me.
We are a Republic, NOT a democracy. That means, we elect representatives to protect us from ourselves. I'll explain down below.
It also means there is NO national election for President, rather, there are 50 different elections (1 per state) plus the District of Columbia. Ergo, the popular vote of the entire country doesn't matter. 50 different elections matter.
Look at it this way, IF most votes wins. The Cubs are playing the Indians in the World Series. The series is FIXED at 7 games, with the team scoring the most runs (votes) wins regardless how many games (states) are won. Cleveland wins the first game 10-0 (votes), but lose the next 6 1-0 (votes). Cleveland lost 6 of 7 games (states), but outscored the Cubs 10-6 (votes). Based on runs scored (popular vote), even though the Indians lost 6 of 7 games (states), they should be the champs, right? Which is it dummies? Games won (states) or total runs (votes)?
The winner of the state is then awarded the appropriate number of electoral votes for that particular state. The less populous states now have a vote in the election. It might only be 3 electoral votes, or it could be 55. Each state has an equal say relative to population.
Now, to get what I was going to say in reference to my paragraph 1, let's say there is a vote in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana to bring back slavery. The popular vote says yes, bring it back by a margin of 3-1. Our elected representatives say that's ridiculous and vote against the measure, over-riding the will of the people.
Which is it DUmmies? Does the popular vote win that, or does the elected representatives shooting it down win?
Democracy in its purest form is inherently bad. It's why we're a Republic.
Lesson over. Now run for your safe space, grab a coloring book, a nice stuffed animal, put on your diaper pin and some soft, soothing music.
I'll see you in the real world.
