I might have found a job. It's looking promising anyway.

Not bad for a guy who got fired last Tuesday and didn't put any applications in until Sunday.

It is a truck driving position. Five day work week, home every day. Average about $200 a day to start. Drivers with seniority are making close to 70k a year. Not touch freight. Almost 100% drop and hook. That means I won't be unloading and loading trucks and I won't be sitting at a dock all day. It sounds like a really good job.

I'm waiting to hear back from them now. I just got done talking with the terminal manager where I'd be working from and everything sounded good there. We'll see.

I wonder if they have talked to his last employer yet?

Hmm, DUmmies who want to enter the trucking industry.  Not really a liberal value.  Go into solar, wind or hemp.  Lord Obama would be more pleased.

The way it sounds, unless he gave employment history info up front, probably not. Maybe things are different in his state and the trucking industry, but hereabouts previous employers are reluctant to do more than confirming a person worked there and the start-end dates. Unless the fact that he was fired came out and he handled the "revelation" poorly, he probably has a good chance of getting the job. Sounds like the starting, if he's busy every week day, would be on the order of $45K-$50K. Getting up to the $70K level would take more than I think he could sustain. Wouldn't mind being wrong, since it would be that many years of him not supported by taxpayers.

Personally I think Tubbs will screw this job up as well.  Assuming he gets the job, I suspect he will be back in a couple of weeks moaning about how the evil rethugs at his company conspired to get him fired.

I will give him credit in that at least he tries to be employed.... maybe not gainfully employed... he is a dummie... he does try.

**sigh** I had some hopes for Tubbs.  Every now and again a dummie will make it and I thought maybe he was one.

I think that the time period that you should use for that bet is 'seconds.' :whistling:

Strange question, maybe, but have you ever felt like your college degree was a liability?

I can't prove it in a legal way, but I'm pretty sure that it was by making a certain person aware of my college degree at my last employer that I lost that job. I just mentioned in passing when I was telling him about my job searches before I landed there. I later realized that that person saw me as a threat to the advancement of his career. He was in a position to influence HR about whether I stayed or not. It did not matter what I did or how good a worker I was after that point. My job there was doomed.

That's why my termination there totally blind-sided me. I thought I was doing a good job. I was doing everything that was asked of me. I wasn't screwing up. I was never warned or written up. It was just out of the blue, "We don't like your job performance and we're going to have to let you go."

For that reason, I'm not revealing the fact that I'm college educated to fellow employees from now on. If it's not relevant to the position, I'm not talking about it.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/1018882055

wonder if he disclosed it here?:

I still have a few hoops I have to jump through, but I have a conditional job offer.

I have to pass a physical, a drug test, and a driving test. Basically, standard stuff for a truck driving job. I also have to pass a physical abilities test. From the description of it, it sounds like they just want to make sure my back is okay. I'm going to orientation on Monday. If all goes well, I should be on the road by Thursday.

I didn't think I'd ever have to get back on the road again like that. It's not my ideal position. But it will pay the bills and it might be better for my soul than what I was doing or what I thought I wanted to do. One benefit to DU is that if you like my Stories from the Road series, it might be back.

More evidence that he was fired for something egregious.  HR and managers are not called at home for "We don't like your job performance and we're going to have to let you go."

:o OK, is this statement false? Or his "bouncy: of a couple of weeks ago about being called on the carpet for sleeping on the job?

As to his question about his degree, it might be a hindrance to getting hired somewhere, since it would make him look like he's trying for a "survival job" while looking for something more in line with his education. Employers don't want to hire some one who will leave while or soon after being trained. OTOH, once he's been hired, they're not likely to fire him for having more education than he told them.

The way it sounds, unless he gave employment history info up front, probably not. Unless the fact that he was fired came out and he handled the "revelation" poorly, he probably has a good chance of getting the job. My prior company has a policy of only confirming employment dates.  Most companies do that nowadays to avoid lawsuits.  If I hire anyone (unlikely) that will be my policy, unless they commit a crime while acting as my employee.

I seem to remember someone in HR telling me that is all they can say unless asked if that employee is eligible for re-hire. That is a yes or no question, and I believe it can be answered.

I have the same recollection, Dixie.
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”
