America has locked up so many black people it has warped our sense of reality

For as long as the government has kept track, the economic statistics have shown a troubling racial gap. Black people are twice as likely as white people to be out of work and looking for a job. This fact was as true in 1954 as it is today.

The most recent report puts the white unemployment rate at around 4.5 percent. The black unemployment rate? About 8.8 percent.

But the economic picture for black Americans is far worse than those statistics indicate. The unemployment rate only measures people who are both living at home and actively looking for a job.

The hitch: A lot of black men aren't living at home and can’t look for jobs — because they’re behind bars.

Though there are nearly 1.6 million Americans in state or federal prison, their absence is not accounted for in the figures that politicians and policymakers use to make decisions. As a result, we operate under a distorted picture of the nation's economic health.

I am not sure but I bet they don't count those people in prison as being unemployed...

Ya know, my older, very liberal brother, complains that jugears could have gotten a lot more done to make America a better country, but the record obstructionism from the Republicans stopped the progress.

Funny, but all I've seen is Republicans get on their backs and beg jugears to scratch their belly, in return for anything he wants.

Yeah, well tell your brother you could have made a whole bunch more money this year if everyone would do exactly what you want. If what they've got for excuses includes "Those...those...those... REPUBLICANS!!!!!!!", then they really got nothing.

Most blacks have figured out two very weird and subtle tricks to avoiding incarceration: 1.) Don't commit crimes; 2.) Don't hang out with people who do.

If his point is that criminals who happen to be black should be let off because of their skin color, Hades, NO!!!

If his point is that criminals who happen to be white are let off because of their skin color, and he can prove it, I'd gladly see that fixed. OTOH, if the seeming disproportion reflects a reality that blacks commit crimes disproportionately, that's a (sub)cultural problem blacks need to face and work to correct (blacks, because many have made it abundantly clear they will refuse such assistance from whites).

If I'm a criminal's target, I really don't care about the criminal's skin color.

The only problem I see is that we're running out of prison space.

When the muslim was talking about "shovel-ready" infrastructure projects, new megaprisons should have been at the top of the list.

If we had enough prison space to stop the policy of catch-and-release on criminals, we'd eventually have most of the democrat base locked up.
