I'm going to play devil's advocate here and suggest that what he was told at the dealership is right, albeit the more expensive route. Why?
Because he went to a licensed and trained mechanic who specializes in a particular brand of vehicle, not Sears, where they are essentially a "tire and lube" type of facility. It would be the equivalent of going to your family physician and asking him to perform brain surgery, by asking the poor Sears guy to diagnose a leak.
Also, checking the oil level on the engine won't do anything to help with a transmission leak, putz.
