Need some car advice

I received a coupon in the mail to have the oil changed on my old Honda Accord SE (2001) for $31.95 at the local Honda dealer as well as a 50+ point inspection.

I made an appointment and took the car in for this $31.95 servicing and I was shocked when I was told I needed a new battery (had just replaced the battery with a Sears Die-Hard 2 years ago). They also told me I need to have the brakes "flushed out", something I'd never heard of and they wanted $125.00 for this.

They then said they thought I may have a slow oil leak. I never noted any oil leak anywhere.

Anyway, I took the car to Sears as the battery is under warranty. They said they could flush the brakes for $39.00 (not $125). They could find nothing wrong with the battery and told me it would be good for another couple of years still.

I then asked them if they knew anything about the mysterious oil leak. They told me they could check it out being it was up on the rack anyway having the brakes flushed out. They found no sign of any oil leak and thought maybe what was allegedly seen was condensation but no oil.

I'm still worried about this as I don't know how reliable Sears is for auto work, etc. Does anyone else happen to know?

Please advise as I really don't feel like searching for a Honda mechanic to find out (and pay!) if I do have a slight oil leak. I was told this oil leak could ruin the transmission. Said car has less than 50K on it and has been well-maintained and is kept in a garage. I keep checking the oil and find none of it missing so ...  ...

Thanks for any help at all as I am confused as all hell needless to say and worried too -- its the only car I've got and it is a necessity where I live due to no decent public transportation to be found. I will add that I have noted no problems with the way the Accord is operating at all. So, curious to know what others think re: my old Honda. 

There's mountains of primitive comments, way too many to bring over even a sampling.

But it's interesting enough that yes, it's worth it clicking on the link and seeing it in the original.

This new Working Poor forum looks promising.....

It's good to see a nice new forum on Skin's for the primitives to dance and frolic in.

And good grief, what an idiot we have here.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and suggest that what he was told at the dealership is right, albeit the more expensive route.  Why? 

Because he went to a licensed and trained mechanic who specializes in a particular brand of vehicle, not Sears, where they are essentially a "tire and lube" type of facility.  It would be the equivalent of going to your family physician and asking him to perform brain surgery, by asking the poor Sears guy to diagnose a leak. 

Also, checking the oil level on the engine won't do anything to help with a transmission leak, putz.

Also also, only a fool puts off having his brakes flushed.  There is a reason it's done.  If you can't understand why, I'm not going to bother explaining.

DUmmie or no DUmmie I have empathy for someone that does not understand the car repair process.

I'm glad the battery checked out ok, and without knowing what "leak" was found, it's hard to comment on the rest. Most batteries do not have "full warranties" as many are pro-rated based on age.

Saying that they were being taken advantage of due to the fact they had a handicap tag and canes in the back seat is just bouncy material.

[aside: anyone been following the air bag issue with Subaru? Gives new meaning to the term 'riding shotgun' , they recommend no one ride in the passenger seat until the recall is complete.]

Probably not a slow oil leak but she should check the 710 fluid for safety sake.  Also while it is in there have them look at the headlight fluid.  O-)

It depends on the make and model. Some johnsons are quite small, others are massive. It depends on the size of your vehicle.

No BH, the dummies brakes are just fine.  Work just like brand new.  Quit giving bad advice to the dummies. Dummie doesn't need to spend money at the dealership for something as trivial as brake flushing.  All the dummie needs to do is circulate the break fluid... speed about 70mph toward a a concrete wall and then slam on the brakes.

Have to do this at least 10 times or 15 time to get that fluid circulated.

After that, the dummie's car will be fine for another 50,000 miles.   :cheersmate:
