There's that, but there are also the reasons that many of them live in hellholes like inner Chicago and DC with municipal and state legal regimes that heavily burden firearms ownership, and/or live in some form of subsidized housing that bans guns, no matter how badly the resident might feel he or she needs one for self-protection.

There is also a cultural change that is happening right under our noses, and has been going on for the least decade or so (my opinion it as already generational)... and it is just accelerating. This is going to become less and less acceptable to younger urban populations who's only contact with a gun, for real, is a first person shooter, or the side arm on the cop's holster. Otherwise these are strange devices that are to be feared (which gets in the way of rational policy making). With less people serving in the military that also helps with the cultural change and less acceptance of guns. Heh, in the last 14 years, almost 3 million have rotated through the Military, Blob.

As Patrick Egan pointed out, just 44 percent of Americans now support an assault weapons ban, the lowest number in the 20 years that the NYT poll has asked the question. In 2011, 63 percent of Americans supported such a ban.

Figure the absolute low achievable is, at least, 35%.  It will never go lower than that.
