Just in the general case, without the full paper trail, it is a leap to say that just because the papers show it was exported to a US distributor does not necessarily mean it ever actually left the European continent. Theft and diversion in shipping occurs all the time, worldwide, with paperwork fabricated to cover it, even in the US and Europe (It's just more limited to controlled, high-dollar, or hard-to-obtain items in the civilized world). It's much easier to steal stuff in transit than to let it get where it's going and then take the risk of possibly-multiple different customs contraband inspections to stage it back to where it came from.
