Now I know why Radio Shack filed for bankruptcy ...
 
Yesterday I received an email from Radio Shack that was promoting a sale on Roku 3's regular $99.99 now $49.99.

This is a great value. I can get Free Speech TV, Netflix, ...

When I went online, to order a unit, they were completely out of stock. So I entered my zipcode in the Locate Store field, and found the store on my way home was the closest, so I stopped in to pick up a unit.

Again, they were out of stock. So the Salesperson, called around other stores in the area, and none of them had a unit for sale. So he started calling the LA area, and again we could not locate a Roku 3, anywhere in So. Cal.

So, I called they 800 number and followed the instruction to purchase a unit over the phone. The salesperson at the other end said that all they do is place the order online themselves and since they were out of stock, he couldn't place the order for me. He then mentioned that the units were being shipped to all the stores at this time, but the store salesperson said that he knows nothing about any additional Roku's being shipped to his store.

I asked when does the sale end, and was told July 18, Saturday. But I don't believe that even if the unit are currently being shipped, they would not arrive in time before the sale ends.

This reminds me of an old butcher joke.

A customer goes to the butcher shop, wanting to buy a pound of sliced ham.

The customer complains to the butcher that, "$.99/pound is too expensive, and that the butcher across the street sells sliced ham at $.89/pound."

The butcher says, "Why don't you buy your sliced ham across the street?"

The customer responds that "The butcher across the street is out of ham."

The butcher then responds "Well, when I'm out of ham, I only charge $.79/pound."

In this case, Radio Shack only offers a great deal on Roku 3 units when they are out of stock.

of mega bad business plans now .

I grew up with Radio Shacks being my candy store but they went under when America stopped building and repairing things abput 30 years ago .You got scammed by the new world order of no bargains ,service or guality replaced with quantity and convenience .

offer an item on sale, and to turn customers away on the basis that you are out of stock. "While supplies last" is a well-known sales caveat, but it may not be enforceable in some jurisdictions.

guess what?

They don't offer those either.

So, I asked how I could take advantage of this sale?

The Salesperson, took my info, and will call me when the units arrive.

I believe he'll give me the sales price if they arrive within a reasonable time. If they arrive next year, I don't believe I'll get the sales price.

And I like Radio Shack!

I like Best Buy. Their problem is they've become a sort of catalog store for Amazon.

People go to Best Buy to check out gadgets before buying them from Amazon.

I really liked Circuit City. They were my only source for computer components for making upgrades at the time. They carried a wider variety than Best Buy.

Best Buy here has become a cell phone store with sideline sales of MP3 players and tablets.

I used to go to Best Buy to buy software and movies. They had an impressive selection back than.

I remeber those days. That was back when it was still cool to watch anime and  it was  on cartoon  network every day. Now its  only  on Saturday nights with adult swim.

Ummmmm ... yeah. RS has been dying since the late 70s. Electronics bypassed their original hobbyist customer base. The Walkman and its clones moved consumers away from RS's mediocre Realistic brand component stereo equipment. Commodore and Apple bested the TRS-80, and MSDOS buried it. RS never had the manufacturing base build their own PC clones, and reselling a commodity with a slim profit margin is difficult at best, and one can get stuck with a lot of unsalable obsolete inventory.

The bottom line is that RS was unable in 3 or 4 decades to establish a new niche in the very difficult consumer electronics market. That RS was mostly small-medium stores where competitors Circuit City, Best Buy, and Fry's Electronics are "big-box"-sized was also a handicap.

Maybe I'm just weird, but I would never do what the primitive is doing.  $50?  He's wasted more than that in his time, as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe I'm just a privileged white guy, but my time is worth more than that to me.  I don't shop.  I find what I want and I go get it.  Straight up hunting. 

Big ticket items?  House, car, motorcycle, UTV ... yeah, I'm going to spend some time because I could save a few thousand bucks.  $50?  Nope.
