As a way of introduction, we have been covering intensely the local discussion on minimum wage

This came after our coverage of the fight for 15 rally. I should have run this yesterday, but... that is another story.

April 17, 2015 (San Diego) On Wednesday the Fight for 15 took to the streets. They are demanding something closer to a living wage and union rights. While we have looked in the past at minimum wage as policy, we decided to take another look at it.

First off, according to the Center for Policy Initiatives an increase in pay would disproportionately help women. Moreover: “More than 300,000 households in our county are living with incomes too low to meet the most basic expenses. 83 percent of them have at least one person working.

This is partly due to the nature of the jobs in San Diego. These include a high proportion in the service sector. The cost of living in San Diego is also pretty high, with the city being the 4th most expensive city in the nation.

I knew this claim was BS, the moment I read it:

San Diego is far from the 4th most expensive in the US! San Diego isn't even the 4th most expensive in California!

From Cost of Living Index for Selected U.S. Cities, the following are all more expensive than San Diego:

Boston, MA
Fairbanks, AK
Framingham-Natick, MA
Honolulu, HI
Juneau, AK
Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA
Nassau County, NY
New York City (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens)
Oakland, CA
Orange County, CA
San Francisco, CA
San Jose, CA
Tamford, CN
Truckee-Nevada County, CA
Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA

I could name several medium-sized SF Bay Area cities not on this list that probably are more expensive than San Diego. Do she pulled that factoid from her nether regions!

Theoretically, if the minimum wage went to $15/hour, I wonder if DUmmies even consider the consequences.

Beyond prices rising...

Those who already earn $15-$25 an hour likely will not be thrilled unless their wages are adjusted upward as well.

Unintended consequences, DUmp monkeys & other socialists/communists/liberals.
