What is a living wage?

http://livingwage.mit.edu/counties/06075

I used San Francisco County because of the discussion about the employer blaming wages as to why he has to close his business.

I believe it is $15 an hour by 2018 ...

The living wage in San Francisco County for ONE adult and ONE child is

$26.03 an hour.

Discuss...

Why stop at 26? Make it 50 or 100.  :whatever: put your money where your month is DUmmie.

1. You want the truth, or what people want to hear?

At those wages, San Francisco will become a mecca for the wealthy only. You saw the article: the guy said IF HE COULD RAISE PRICES HE WOULD. But the prices are on the books themselves. Think of what would happen to business who can increase prices: they will, because they have to in order to pay wages and finance COGS. Then you have wages pushing up prices so the people who work there can hardly afford to live or shop there.

The result will be to segregate people by class even more than they already are. Manhattan is another example of this.

3. $15 an hour is a mecca for the wealthy? What?

So what do you do, pay people $8 an hour and have them live in tenements?

WHERE do the people who clean the rooms, wash the dishes and sell the books live?

Please answer this

4. Let's discuss the actual issue, OK?

The owner said that he would like to increase prices, but he can't.

That MUST mean that there are businesses that CAN raise prices.

And they will. And that livable wage will soon not seem so livable. So, they increase it again. And prices go up again...and so on.

Do you think the people who do non-skilled labor in San Francisco LIVE in San Francisco, or at least anywhere near the better parts of San Francisco? They haven't for many years.

The end result is that some places will become for the wealthy only, and others, like inland California and places like it, will be where lower-income people predominate. It's already like that. San Francisco is limited by its geography, so it can't build much more housing, if any. That's the real problem: the land is too expensive for low-cost housing that would be the baseline for a cheaper cost of living.

One billion dollars.  Current US ones, after taxes.  I could live comfortably on that.

How can anyone expect to flourish on a living wage.
What is it about libs who only want people to be able to scrape by ?
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

No, we should build barracks and keep them penned in when not working, like on the plantations.  Liberal nirvana!

I would like to go over there and ask them that if they owned a Burger King and they paid their employees 15.00 an hour, how much would they charge for a hamburger, how much for fries and how much for a soda. In order to pay the 10 employees that worked that hour, the utilities for that hour, the payroll taxes for that hour, the property taxes for that hour and make a little profit what would a meal cost?

Could those employees afford to eat at the place they worked?

About 22,000 USX employees stopped work on August 1, 1986, after the United Steelworkers of America and the company could not agree on new employee contract terms. This was characterized by the company as a strike and by the union as a lockout. This resulted in most USX facilities becoming idle until February 1, 1987, seriously degrading the steel division's market share. A compromise was brokered and accepted by the union membership on January 31, 1987.[13]

On February 4, 1987, three days after the agreement had been reached to end the work stoppage, USX announced that four USX plants would remain closed permanently, eliminating about 3,500 union jobs.

I was raised not far from the US Steel Fairless Works. Many friends in the 60's made lots of money at US Steel until........they made zero.

A house, two or three cars, a boat, vacation home, six weeks vacation was never enough.  :thatsright:

The 2500 acres once occupied by the Fairless Works is now a patch work of much smaller businesses.

I've seen a few strikes in this town, and workers never make up for what they lose during an extended strike.  A strike lasts a year and is finally settled over a nickle pay raise and those lost wages are never recouped with that nickle.  And yes, that has happened here.

ADM, Firestone (now closed), Caterpillar, Tate & Lyle have all seen strikes that lasted more than 6 months. It's stupid.

The same thing happened back in '77 to International Harvester.  7 month strike by the UAW, resulted in the company divesting itself of its light truck and Scout division, and its remaining heavy truck, industrial and agricultural being spun off as Navistar, Dressler, and CaseIH (owned by Tenneco) respectively

A living wage is one that you earn! You need to earn it to make a living DUmbass!
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. I highlighted the issue in your question, DUmmies don't want anyone else to make a profit, they want one themselves just nobody else.  Also a Whooper would be like $8 or $9 bucks, or not because they would just use automated ordering and making systems with about 1-2 employees instead of 8-10.

Why stop at 26? Make it 50 or 100.  :whatever: put your money where your month is DUmmie.

This is what I have always asked a liberal and it stumps them every time.  Why stop at $15 or $20, lets make it $150 per hour and the ones who aren't radical usually get it after thinking for a second, the others just don't answer.

Probably ought to ask those union workers that used to get a paycheck from Hostess.
