First of all, the armed services are the bases of international power/influence Libs and Progs believe the US should not have,
Second, Libs and Progs see armed services as diverting $$ from their beloved social and enviro programs.
Third, Libs and Progs see armed services as places of meritocracy (even if imperfectly so). Competency and accomplishments create inequalities, which the egalitarian Libs and Progs see as the root of all social evil.
From that POV, the service academies are centers and sources of so much that Libs and Progs bitterly hate.
