Color me a bit skeptical of the explanation that he was hit in the face with a resistance band that broke and also caused him to fall, breaking ribs. Yes older people work out (I'm >60 and do something more 5-7 days a week - treadmill or outdoor trails, hand weights, half marathons). Resistance bands are popular equipment, and obviously can wear out. But I cannot imagine Reid being so penny-pinching as to buy cheap crap or so stupid that he would continue using a band that is obviously badly worn. Either is possible, but would take a greater degree of stupidity than I attribute to him.
The scenario I think more likely is that he was holding and pulling on both ends of a band (using handles attached to each end) that was wrapped around a pole (or something similar), one end slipped, and in falling backwards the handle snapped back and hit him in the face. The snap-back of the handle would account for the facial injuries; the fall would account for the broken ribs.
Or maybe one end of the band was hooked onto something, came loose, causing the fall and hitting him in the face.
The narrative of the band breaking while being used in a similar way would not account for the severity of his facial injuries.
