Impact of low gas prices
I am in a state of bewilderment and somewhat bemused happiness to see my local gas prices go from $3.78 last year to $2.10 the last time I checked. But, using the 1/2 glass empty/full analogy, I began to wonder about the impact on the economy-especially in tax collection. Kentucky is already planning on a significant part of its revenues being impacted:
"The main user fee is the tax on motor fuels, which is paid at the pump and has two components: a variable excise tax — 21.2 cents beginning Jan. 1 — and a fixed user fee of 5 cents a gallon for gasoline and 2 cents a gallon for diesel and other "special fuels."
There also is a state fee that is paid at the pump — 1.4 cents a gallon — for cleanup of old underground fuel storage tanks.
And there is a federal tax of 18.4 cents a gallon per gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon of diesel. The federal tax is not indexed for inflation and hasn't changed since 1993.
Local governments also will feel a pinch from the lower tax because 48 percent of it is returned to cities and counties in the form of revenue sharing for local streets and roads.

Those states with taxes that are dependent on a variable excise tax as a percentage of pump prices must be hurting and not enjoying the fall in prices. Somehow at some time this has got to impact what gas taxes are supposed to be spent on - road building and repair.

2. So raise the taxes, still a ton of savings for consumers and the roads get fixed. Win- win.
Prices went down 40%, raise the taxes 40% from current per gallon rates to make it up, proportionality it will be minor
This is why you amoeba are internet laughingstocks.

Gas price increases: Clinton vs Bush
Under Clinton, gas prices per gallon were $1.20 when he took office and about $1.25 when he left office, 8 years later. That's accumulative annual increase of UNDER one half of one percent per year for those 8 years.
Under Bush, gas has increased from $1.25 per gallon to currently over $3.00 per gallon with the trend continuing upward. Using the current price of $3.00 per gallon, means under Bush gas prices have been increasing at a cumulative annual rate of 20% per year for these 5 1/2 years with no end in sight.
If this rate continues, by the time Bush leaves office in Jan of '09, gas prices will exceed $4.50 per gallon.

2. I heard a prediction on the news last night
that prices would hit $3.50 for regular by mid-summer, given the current trend. Thanks, Asshat-in-Chief! :grr: I don't doubt that prices could be $4.50 a gallon by the time he leaves. That would put our gas prices higher than Canada.
Also, I saw a neocon political campaign commercial for a woman who's running for the NC State House whose sole platform is that Democrats are to blame for NC's gas tax increase and, by default, to blame for high gas prices. She looks like an idiot and even says something to the effect that ultra-conservatives need to make sure they vote for her

but, goddamit... Clinton gets blamed for everything. Time to start blaming * for anything that happens.....earthquakes, snakebites, hickies... on Dumbshit.
Thursday mornings I have breakfast with a bunch of old farts. I made sure to point out that gas has more than doubled since Dimson took over. That got more agreement than any argument about peak oil or alternate fuels.
You and I can talk about "The Long Emergency" or "Power Down", but Joe Lunchbucket apparently only pays attention to how bad his wallet gets hit.

DUmmy packman, I can see that this is really causing you consternation and worry. Please feel free to remit the amount of $1.68 per gallon (the difference of the 3.78 and 2.10 you cite in your posting) of gas you purchase to your state treasury to absolve yourself of any future worry and concern this may cause you.

Lower gas prices make DUmmies cry and that's a good thing.
Lower prices mean that normal people are able to fill up instead of just putting $20 in.
Full tank means normal people are able to go more places...and purchase things with the savings from not having to pay so much in gas prices. Which means the state gets more revenue in sales taxes.
Lower gas prices make normal people forget about switching to a Prius and have them shopping for an SUV that they really want.
I don't see any negative to the lower gas prices.

Yeah, that's the rumor in Illinois. But somehow, I don't think even they would be so wantonly stupid to try that. The spineless basterds in Springfield couldn't even bring the 2011 New Year's eve 67% income tax raise to an extension vote last session. The editorial OK'd by Madigan lived one day. His daughter's governors run internal polls took a heck of a shot.
