Vermont Kills Single-Payer Health Care Plan After Tax Hikes Prove Too Hefty
The reason the state says it won't pursue the plan is that it's just too expensive. Even Democratic Gov. Pete Shumlin, who hoped the system would be a highlight of his political career, agrees that the tax hikes necessary to fund the system would have been prohibitive.
The financing plan, announced only recently, would have required an additional 11.5 percent business payroll tax as well as a 9.5 percent income tax on top of the state's existing income tax. As the Burlington Free Press notes, Shumlin was concerned that small business would be hit with both, calling the financing plan "detrimental to Vermonters" as soon as it was released.

It would never work on a national scale, either without exorbitant tax rates on everyone.

I love it when democrats learn economics. :rotf:

If only someone had told them this would be the outcome before they tried it...

The socialist governor of Vermont didn't get a majority of the vote, so the state Senate has to but they're over 80% D there, so Shumer will win another term. What's he's not saying is that Gruber was hired by him to figure out how to go to single-payer - when Gruber's stupid remarks were reported on, Shumer stopped paying him and put him on as a unpaid consultant, but kept paying Gruber's staff. I bet cali is crushed.

Oh my...still paying his staff....that must mean that the voters in Vermont are really stupid.

Not me. I love it when their faces are smashed in it.
But I appreciate the sentiments.
If only someone had told them this would be the outcome before they tried it...

And this wasn't the only recent defeat of single-payer - a little while ago, the Swiss voted 2-1 against it in one of their countless referendums. The countries with single-payer are faltering badly - in Britian, over 3 million people are on waiting lists and the number of Brits that are paying out-of-pocket has increase tenfold in the past ten years.
