Oh my.

Is it safe to hitchhike anymore? Need to visit family for the holidays. Anyone here have any advice?
My car is broken down, I'm broke, and I don't get paid until the day before thanksgiving. I'm not sure I will be able to procure a rental car or a bus ticket on the day of the 26th.
My family are all either broke or elderly and unable to travel the distance to pick me up.
The trip is about 100 miles, from Athens GA to Cartersville, Ga (about 40 miles North of Atlanta).
I've posted on the "rideshare" section of my local Craigslist. So far no response.
I reckon if I dress nice and pack light and try not to put off a "hobo" vibe I have a decent chance at getting a ride. I would think there would be lots of traffic on the roads since most everyone in Athens (a college town) leaves town for the holidays.
I should be able to get a bus or rent a car easier for the return trip, as I plan on doing that the first week of December.

1. I hitchiked everywhere in the late 80s-early 90s w/o a problem.
I found that if I was walking (forward) with my thumb (and arm) out , I would get more rides than if I was standing around with my thumb out.
PS. Are you a guy? I'd never recommend that a women hitchhike.

8. Go for it. The closer you can start to a college, the better.
Let people know where you are and keep your phone handy.

2. I would see if there are any places to post in the Cartersville area- and at the college in Athens
to try and get a more local hook up.

3. Can't you buy your ticket the day after Thanksgiving?
I'm sure they'd be happier to see you a day late than to read about you vanishing on the highway somewhere.

7. I'm afraid the megabus (the only service running between Athens and ATL) will be booked up with all
the college kids leaving town.

4. I haven't hitch hiked since the 80s
and mostly in ny or cali...
i'm not sure it was ever particularly safe, but wouldn't imagine it's any less safe these days.
that said, i would suspect that drivers are less likely to pick someone up these days.

5. I thought that was illegal nowadays.
I considered allowing a hitch hiker to ride with me, but I still remember when some guy was pulled over for allowing someone to hitchhike with him.
I'm not sure if it is legal or illegal.
I did find it hilarious however when maybe 4 years ago, I saw some guy with a sign saying "Looking for a Ride to University of Pennsylvania" I live in Maryland.

11. I often see people hitching near my destination. I'm as trepidatious about picking people up as I
about hitching. But maybe next time I am in a position to pick somebody up I will. I also saw a show a couple years ago about 2 people who were trying to hitch from one end of the country to the other, and they were having a hard time at it.
Apparently the journey took 4 times longer than they expected.

12. I've hitchhiked tens of thousand of miles over the years, although not much lately.
I never had a serious problem and met all sorts of interesting people.
I've also picked up numerous hitchhikers. Never had a serious problem and met all sorts of interesting people.

coming out of Athens for the holiday. Try to find out where they post ride shares at UGA.

16. Cops will arrest you in a heart beat. Being that I'm
a retired truck driver, I would go to the truck stops and ask truck drivers for help. If they are not going your way, many times they'll get on the CB radio and help you get a ride.
Tell truck drivers your story, just like you they are trying to get home too!
^^^probably the best advice; one can always trust truck drivers.
<<<when a teenager, once "hitch-hiked" from Grand Island, Nebraska to Chicago, Illinois to Cincinnati, Ohio to Cleveland, Ohio to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to near Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
Wholly by truck.
The deal with truck drivers was that one didn't have to solicit rides oneself; each and every single one of these drivers found me a ride to the next point before leaving.

Both of my brothers drive truck. They are both really good guys. It's hard to find a "bad" truck driver.

Do truckers still use CB?

Thumbing rides was common and easy for college students in the 60s.
I'm not afraid of hitchhikers today, but never pick one up.
Every one I see looks like he'd bring a fearsome odor into the car.
-

Yes. I don't know how much when compared to earlier on, but they still use them.
-
I know hitchhiking was common back than. I do not see anyone do that these days. I have seen signs that say not to pick up hitchhikers.

Usually outside of prisons.
People are crazy these days. I blame liberals.

Yes, I see those signs around prisons. Either way, I would never pick up a hitchhiker.
It was a bad idea to de-institutionalize crazy people. I suspect many are leftists.

I should be able to get a bus or rent a car easier for the return trip, as I plan on doing that the first week of December mooching money off of my relatives.
That's the only reason the DUmmy is thinking about going through all that trouble to get to see his family, his only reason for going is to mooch money and he figures his chances are better if he shows up in person rather than begging over the phone.

Or the DUmmie lives in a dorm, and the U is shutting down food service over the break.

Why do so many Dummies live paycheck to paycheck? Why do so many Dummies have non-functioning cars?

30. Jesus H. Christ on a cracker. First they tried making feeding the homeless in public
illegal (Los Angeles, Ft. Lauderdale and Orland) and now they're making picking up hitchhikers illegal? Don't the pigs have anything better to ****ing do . . . like, say, solve some crimes or shoot a few more unarmed black youth?
King Charlie, your liberal overloads are the ones creating all these regulations, Dumass.

Am I the only one getting tired of these sad sack, no-account, scrub-assed DUmmies who can't transport themselves 100 miles telling US how to live?
Seems like every single thread reveals yet another marginal existence that requires extensive advice and assistance just to get through the day.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. At least he doesn't have to ask advice on how to go 100 miles, you turd.

5. Bring on the runoffs. I would crawl over 40 miles of broken glass and barbed wire to vote against
Shady Deal and Scummy Perdue Jr. The WALKING 100 miles to see loved ones should be no problem, right?

17. My dad had PTSD and it affected him to the point where he couldn't work a normal 9 to 5 job. He
served 2 tours in Vietnam. After that he was self employed and worked odd jobs where he could work by himself, and wasn't able to save up anything in the way of retirement. He lives on social security and military pension in his old age, barely scraping by. The windfall of the PTSD money is too little too late IMO.

212. Couldn't have said it better myself. Unless I get a 100% subsidy, a pay raise without a hike in
premium, or the cost of care comes waaaaaaaay down, I won't be able to have any health care. That $103 I'll be paying in Obamacare premiums goes straight to some 1% fat cat's pocket and I'll get doodley squat out of it.
If I get sick and it can't be cured with Robitussen, neosporin, or asprin, I reckon it'll kill me. lol Please, something serious, kill him.

33. Dreading the whole holiday season. My family are all fundies and the dinner conversation is all
either racist jokes, rants about how "Obama is gonna come after our guns" or talk about sports or hunting. It was better when my aunt was still around, she was a crazy fundie too but at least she played music and would have her band over so there was entertainment. Oh, and there will be prayer, and I'm an atheist. Awkward doesn't even begin to describe that feeling.
Probably gonna skip the family stuff all together and spend those days at home alone drinking or reading or watching re-runs of Bill Maher on-demand something... just to counteract all the Jesus in the air. I'd ideally like to have a "What Would Charles Bukowski Do?" day and go to a titty bar or a horse track or something, but I doubt any of those places will be open.

I doubt it has anything to do with age or finances.

I picked up a hitchhiker once. It was late and she asked me to drop her off at this gas station in a bad part of town that was on my way. I did. She was a friggin' prostitute!! NEVER AGAIN will I pick up someone.

I wish I felt comfortable enough to pick up hitchhikers on the rez I cross. Distances between communities are so far.
But unless I have someone riding shotgun, I don't do it. I think I'd risk it if it was very cold anyway.
Gads! I traveled the Midwest and eastern states in the 70s via thumb. Only had one bad experience when traveling with a friend. I can only hope the fellow was guilty of what I suspected. Otherwise, this little red head went Detroit on him for nothing. :o
