Math is forbidding for Democrats in struggle for Senate
On the last day of the 2014 campaign, Democrats knew they were in trouble.
Long ago, the party had given up hope of winning back the House in Tuesday’s midterm elections. By Monday, it had skipped ahead to winning the post-election blame game. “House Democrats have succeeded on every measure within our control,†the party’s House campaign committee announced preemptively in the early afternoon.
And at the end of a bitter and massively expensive campaign, it appeared the Senate might be slipping from Democrats’ grasp as well.
In all, there are 13 states where Senate seats might change from one party to the other. Republicans need to win nine of them to attain a 51-seat majority in the Senate for the first time since 2007. On Monday, Republicans seem to be leading, by a lot or by a little, in eight of those races.....
Meet the Republican who may become the youngest ever woman in Congress
WASHINGTON – An upstate New York Republican is slated Tuesday to shatter the congressional record of former Brooklyn Democratic Rep. Elizabeth Holtzman as the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.
Elise Stefanik, 30, is favored to win in New York’s upstate 21st District and break history as the youngest female to win a seat in the House. Holtzman was sworn in at age 31 in 1973 at a time when women weren’t even allowed in the congressional gym.
“I’m just sorry it’s a not a Democrat,†Holtzman told The Post. “But hats off to her. We need more young women in Congress.â€.....
Historic Number of Governors Could Lose in 2014
While the landscape of 2014 Senate races looks like it might tilt entirely in one direction at the end, this year's set of gubernatorial contests has only gotten more chaotic throughout the year. There is unprecedented uncertainty surrounding the key races and the potential for a record number of incumbents to lose their seats.
Out of 36 governor's races on the ballot this year, around a dozen are too close to call heading into Election Day.
Averages of the public polls show 11 sets of gubernatorial hopefuls within 4 percentage pointsand another six within 10 percentage points. By another measure, eight contests look like they could be won or lost by less than 2 points, a feat not seen in any election cycle since at least 1900.
What's more, this instability isn't just in open-seat races, which tend to be more unpredictable. A record 11 incumbents are in danger of losing their seats, not including Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie, who already went down in defeat by losing his August primary.
That means this year could break or tie the previous record for losses by incumbent governors—11, set in 1962. In 2010, by contrast, just two incumbents were unseated, though that year's midterms featured significantly more open races.....
Utah’s Love poised to become first Haitian-American member of Congress
Fast-rising Republican star Mia Love could make history next week in her bid for a House seat from Utah, but first she’ll have to beat back a surprising late surge from Democrat Doug Owens.
A win for Ms. Love, the former mayor of Saratoga Springs, would make her the first black Republican woman and the first Haitian-American elected to Congress. She’s being challenged by Mr. Owens, a Salt Lake City lawyer and son of a former congressman who’s been closing the gap in recent polls......

Oh my.
I dunno whose district this is--Carl's, Karin's, BlueStateSaint's?
Here in Nebraska, with three congressional seats, all currently Republican, two are securely safe--the one in Lincoln, and the one covering the western five-sixths of the whole state--but we're in trouble, perhaps deep trouble, with the Omaha seat.
The incumbent, Lee Terry, was challenged by the Tea Party during the primary, which left some really bad divisive feelings. I dunno why the Tea Party didn't like him; he seemed more than sufficiently conservative to me. His challenger finally endorsed him.....two days ago.
I dunno what's going to happen here. This could be a Republican loss in the House.
But one remains hopeful.
7 things that will almost definitely happen on election night
Happy Election Day, America. Things have changed since the last time everyone went to the polls. Then, Barack Obama was re-elected to a second four-year term. Now, he's been largely benched by his party, spending less time on the campaign trail than his much more popular wife, first lady Michelle Obama, former president Bill Clinton and potential future presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Midterm elections are more local affairs and the issues vary from contest to contest.
But midterms have national consequences, and what happens Tuesday will help determine what President Obama can get done in his final two years in office. It will tee up the coming 2016 presidential contest and give Americans the chance to try on a more powerful GOP as they start to think about who should be the next president......

Crist files emergency motion to extend voting hours...
COLUMBIA, South Carolina — South Carolina voters have sent Republican Tim Scott back to the U.S. Senate, making him the first black candidate to win a statewide race since just after the Civil War.
Scott was declared the winner based on projections from exit poll data.
Scott has served in the U.S. Senate since January 2013, appointed to the post by Gov. Nikki Haley after Jim DeMint resigned. He has spent his time quietly building support back home and expanding his base from Charleston. His seat will be up for re-election for a full term in 2016.
Scott is also the first African-American senator from the South since Reconstruction.
Scott beat Democratic Richland County Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson, who also is African-American, and Jill Bossi of the upstart American Party.
Speaking of Florida, how is cray-cray Grayson doing so far?

Nancy Pelosi: ‘It’s a difficult night’
Republicans were poised to strengthen their grip on the House in Tuesday’s midterm election, eyeing their largest majority since the 1940s.
With around 40 competitive congressional races taking place around the country, most analysts and operatives predicted that Republicans, who currently enjoy a 17-seat hold on the chamber, would gain five to 12 seats. But with the political environment tilting strongly in the GOP’s favor and with Republicans on offense in the vast majority of races, they stressed that those numbers could go higher......
Wolf already declared the winner in Pennsylvania. Great job staying in the race Corbett.
Hi everyone!Another pickup. :cheersmate:
We got Arkansas!
Update at 7:30 p.m.
Burton has taken a solid lead in early voting, 52 percent to 46 percent. The Libertarian and Green Party candidates make up the rest. To put this in perspective, Davis and her GOP challenger Mark Shelton were almost dead even after early voting in 2012. Davis pulled ahead by winning nearly 55 percent of the Election Day ballots.
Looks like majority of Florida went Republic, Senate is split, House took the Cake, and Scott is my Governor."Setting the table for another stolen election." /DU

Brown is now up in NH?
Effectively tied now according to CNN.
I thought Roberts would win, very narrowly, but if they’re making a call within an hour after the polls closed, there was nothing narrow about this. In the end, the party unified and Republicans came home. Congrats to the whole GOP team on dragging Roberts over the finish line.
Assuming Joni Ernst wins in Iowa, that’s 51. Tillis can make it 52 if he comes through and Dan Sullivan can make it 53 in Alaska in a few hours. A month from now, Bill Cassidy will make it 54 in Louisiana. And Ed Gillespie still has a prayer at making it 55 in Virginia. Oh my!
It sure is looking like the Republicans have captured the Senate.
Good night. GOooooodddddd Night :D :cheersmate:

The GOP easily won the 218 seats required and was on track to match or surpass the 246 seats they held in President Harry S. Truman's administration more than 60 years ago.
Overall, the GOP gained 14 seats and counting; Democrats, just one.
Obama suffered an ignominious distinction. The president, whose party lost 63 seats in 2010, saw Democrats lose 12 seats and became the two-term president with the most midterm defeats, edging past Truman's 74 by one.

West Virginia Elects America’s Youngest State Lawmaker
A West Virginia University freshman who did most of her campaigning out of her dorm room became the youngest state lawmaker in the nation Tuesday.
Republican Saira Blair, a fiscally conservative 18-year-old, will represent a small district in West Virginia’s eastern panhandle, about 1½ hours outside Washington, D.C., after defeating her Democratic opponent 63% to 30%, according to the Associated Press. A third candidate got 7% of the vote.....
.....In a statement, Ms. Blair thanked her supporters and family, as well as her opponents for running a positive campaign. “History has been made tonight in West Virginia, and while I am proud of all that we have accomplished together, it is the future of this state that is now my singular focus,†she said.
Ms. Blair campaigned on a pledge to work to reduce certain taxes on businesses, and she also holds antiabortion and pro-gun positions. She defeated Democrat Layne Diehl, a 44-year-old Martinsburg attorney, whose top priorities included improving secondary education and solving the state’s drug epidemic......

Pat Quinn (D) has conceded the Illinois gubernatorial race to Republican challenger Bruce Rauner.
"It's clear that we do not have enough votes to win the election, and therefore we respect the result," Quinn said during a Wednesday afternoon press conference.
It was Quinn's first public statement since insisting late Tuesday night he would not concede until 100 percent of Illinois' votes -- including absentee ballots and early voting ballots -- had been counted.

She wasn't expected to win even though that area is heavy GOP. Good for her! On a further note...
1. The GOP has won the WV state house of delegates... the first time that has happened since the 1930's. I never thought I would see the day that happened.
2. The incumbent dem, Nick Joe Rahall (D), lost the US house of representatives seat he has held for almost 38 years and the other GOP US HOR candidate won too. That leaves WV with only one federal government seat in dem hands... the one held by Manchin.
WV is now effectively lost to the dems for the next two years. :yahoo:
Perky,
I read that Manchin said today he wasn't interested in switching to the Republicans. He made it sound like he would rather go home and run for governor instead.
You think he might change his mind, come January?
Republicans gain control of Senate in US midterm elections -
President Obama will face strong opposition in Congress in the rest of his tenure
Nebraska, Omaha. Anakhanum Hidayatova - APA. According to the preliminary results of the midterm elections in the United States, republicans gained the Senate majority.
APA's correspondent, observing the elections reports that republican took control over both houses of congress for the first time over the last eight years. It shows that President Barack Obama will face difficulties and obstacles in both domestic and foreign policy in the rest of his tenure. It is known that Republicans take a firm stance against Russia.
According to the preliminary results, Republicans can hold 55 of the Senate's 100 seats. Republicans currently hold 45 seats.
Republicans grabbed Democratic Senate seats in North Carolina, Colorado, Iowa, West Virginia, Arkansas, Montana and South Dakota. Current Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has already congratulated Republican leader Mitch McConnell.
Republican Ben Sasse won Nebraska Senate race. Jeff Fortenberry was elected to the House of Representatives. Fortenberry said at the meeting with the Azerbaijani delegation that Azerbaijan is an important partner for the U.S.
Midterm elections are held every two years, House of Representatives (435 seats) are re-established and one-third of the 100 Senate seats are renewed. The election results will be officially approved in December.
Oh it gets even better in WV. Seems one the dems in the state senate switched to the GOP today and that give the GOP a 18-16 majority in that body.
This just keeps getting better and better. :yahoo:

Seems some of the long time dems, heavy hitters in the state, have lost their seats.
It will be really interesting if Manchin runs for gov in 2016. The senate seat he vacates will probably go to the GOP, and Manchin may not win depending on who runs against him... especially since Manchin used his dem party super delegate to get obumbles nominated. That has got to be some baggage for ole Joe.
So whatever happens is still the fault of the party that owns the majority of the government. The Democrats own it; they ain't getting off the hook.
Missouri had a state rep defect to the Rs today.
The Rs already had a veto-proof majority against our idiot governor, so this is just padding.
Pretty good for a "dead regional party", ain't it BH? :cheersmate:
