Title: live election thread (public) 11-04-14
Post by: franksolich on November 03, 2014, 02:26:43 PM
This is the general live election thread for November 4, 2014.

There are two other live election threads, one in the DUmpster that pertains specifically to primitives on Skins's island and other moonbats, and the other in Political Rants and Raves, a closed forum, where one's free to express opinions and feelings one doesn't necessarily want to be public.

This one here is wide open, very public, to newbies and lurkers.

So as to not abuse the sensitivities of some members--and remember, they have very good and valid reasons for being the way they are, and I don't blame them--please post primitive-related topics and comments in the live election thread in the DUmpster, not here.

Math is forbidding for Democrats in struggle for Senate

On the last day of the 2014 campaign, Democrats knew they were in trouble.

Long ago, the party had given up hope of winning back the House in Tuesday’s midterm elections. By Monday, it had skipped ahead to winning the post-election blame game. “House Democrats have succeeded on every measure within our control,” the party’s House campaign committee announced preemptively in the early afternoon.

And at the end of a bitter and massively expensive campaign, it appeared the Senate might be slipping from Democrats’ grasp as well.

In all, there are 13 states where Senate seats might change from one party to the other. Republicans need to win nine of them to attain a 51-seat majority in the Senate for the first time since 2007. On Monday, Republicans seem to be leading, by a lot or by a little, in eight of those races.....

In Nebraska, where the polls close at 8:00 p.m. central time and 7:00 p.m. mountain time (two time zones in this state; I dunno which one dutch508's in) the Republican Benjamin Sasse is looking to win almost two-thirds of the vote against Democrat David Domina, if the polls hold true.

But that's a Republican "hold," not a "gain."

Meet the Republican who may become the youngest ever woman in Congress

WASHINGTON – An upstate New York Republican is slated Tuesday to shatter the congressional record of former Brooklyn Democratic Rep. Elizabeth Holtzman as the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.

Elise Stefanik, 30, is favored to win in New York’s upstate 21st District and break history as the youngest female to win a seat in the House. Holtzman was sworn in at age 31 in 1973 at a time when women weren’t even allowed in the congressional gym.

“I’m just sorry it’s a not a Democrat,” Holtzman told The Post. “But hats off to her. We need more young women in Congress.”.....

I dunno whose district this is--Carl's, Karin's, BlueStateSaint's?

Here in Nebraska, with three congressional seats, all currently Republican, two are securely safe--the one in Lincoln, and the one covering the western five-sixths of the whole state--but we're in trouble, perhaps deep trouble, with the Omaha seat.

The incumbent, Lee Terry, was challenged by the Tea Party during the primary, which left some really bad divisive feelings.  I dunno why the Tea Party didn't like him; he seemed more than sufficiently conservative to me.  His challenger finally endorsed him.....two days ago.

I dunno what's going to happen here.  This could be a Republican loss in the House.

But one remains hopeful.

Historic Number of Governors Could Lose in 2014

While the landscape of 2014 Senate races looks like it might tilt entirely in one direction at the end, this year's set of gubernatorial contests has only gotten more chaotic throughout the year. There is unprecedented uncertainty surrounding the key races and the potential for a record number of incumbents to lose their seats.

Out of 36 governor's races on the ballot this year, around a dozen are too close to call heading into Election Day.

Averages of the public polls show 11 sets of gubernatorial hopefuls within 4 percentage pointsand another six within 10 percentage points. By another measure, eight contests look like they could be won or lost by less than 2 points, a feat not seen in any election cycle since at least 1900.

What's more, this instability isn't just in open-seat races, which tend to be more unpredictable. A record 11 incumbents are in danger of losing their seats, not including Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie, who already went down in defeat by losing his August primary.

That means this year could break or tie the previous record for losses by incumbent governors—11, set in 1962. In 2010, by contrast, just two incumbents were unseated, though that year's midterms featured significantly more open races.....

We'll see.

Again, here in Nebraska, where the current Republican governor is retiring, the Republican candidate Pete Ricketts is favored to best the Democrat candidate Chuck Haasebrook by about two-to-one, if the polls are accurate.

But that would be a Republican "hold," not a "gain."

Utah’s Love poised to become first Haitian-American member of Congress

Fast-rising Republican star Mia Love could make history next week in her bid for a House seat from Utah, but first she’ll have to beat back a surprising late surge from Democrat Doug Owens.

A win for Ms. Love, the former mayor of Saratoga Springs, would make her the first black Republican woman and the first Haitian-American elected to Congress. She’s being challenged by Mr. Owens, a Salt Lake City lawyer and son of a former congressman who’s been closing the gap in recent polls......

What to Watch For as G.O.P. Expects Big Night at Polls

WASHINGTON — It is a recipe for sensory overload: Election returns will start flooding every device and screen Tuesday evening, capturing the outcomes of 36 governors’ contests, the battle for control of the Senate, nearly 50 competitive House races and countless ballot questions.

Some trends are clear: A big night is expected for Republicans, a dreary one for Democrats.

But some mysteries and many intriguing questions remain, and their answers will emerge throughout the evening. Here is a guide to what to watch for on election night, and how to cut through the cacophony.....

The suggestions at the link are:

How big of a win will this be for Republicans?
What do the results tell us about the 2016 presidential race?
Do the Clintons still have their magic?
What can be gleaned from the House races?
Will governors’ races mirror the congressional races?
What happens to the Obama coalition?
Who will get credit if Republicans win, and who deserves it?

7 things that will almost definitely happen on election night

Happy Election Day, America. Things have changed since the last time everyone went to the polls. Then, Barack Obama was re-elected to a second four-year term. Now, he's been largely benched by his party, spending less time on the campaign trail than his much more popular wife, first lady Michelle Obama, former president Bill Clinton and potential future presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Midterm elections are more local affairs and the issues vary from contest to contest.

But midterms have national consequences, and what happens Tuesday will help determine what President Obama can get done in his final two years in office. It will tee up the coming 2016 presidential contest and give Americans the chance to try on a more powerful GOP as they start to think about who should be the next president......

The seven things:

#1 -- There will be a surprise
#2 -- Most Americans won't take part
#3 -- Democrats will lose the Senate
#4 -- Republicans will elect an African-American senator in the South
#5 -- There will be a runoff
#6 -- Not too much will change
#7 -- It will be a nail biter for incumbent governors

I haven't even seen any TV ads by Jim Oberweis, but lots from Durbin. Durbin up 10+ in the polls so why is he wasting money?

Quinn v. Rauner is running a lot closer. Quinn leads by less than 1.

Yes. At least according to the local news station. Kentucky is part of their viewing area as is Ohio. Ohio and WV polls don't close until later. WV is 7:30. I think Ohio is 8:00 7:30.

CNN says 2 percent is in. 15,113 to 10,280 for McConnell.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina — South Carolina voters have sent Republican Tim Scott back to the U.S. Senate, making him the first black candidate to win a statewide race since just after the Civil War.

Scott was declared the winner based on projections from exit poll data.

Scott has served in the U.S. Senate since January 2013, appointed to the post by Gov. Nikki Haley after Jim DeMint resigned. He has spent his time quietly building support back home and expanding his base from Charleston. His seat will be up for re-election for a full term in 2016.

Scott is also the first African-American senator from the South since Reconstruction.

Scott beat Democratic Richland County Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson, who also is African-American, and Jill Bossi of the upstart American Party.

Nancy Pelosi: ‘It’s a difficult night’

Republicans were poised to strengthen their grip on the House in Tuesday’s midterm election, eyeing their largest majority since the 1940s.

With around 40 competitive congressional races taking place around the country, most analysts and operatives predicted that Republicans, who currently enjoy a 17-seat hold on the chamber, would gain five to 12 seats. But with the political environment tilting strongly in the GOP’s favor and with Republicans on offense in the vast majority of races, they stressed that those numbers could go higher......

Tea Party activist leading in race to replace Wendy Davis after early voting for Texas Senate seat
http://trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com/2014/11/candidates-seeking-to-replace-wendy-davis-in-only-swing-district-in-texas-senate.html/

Update at 7:30 p.m.

Burton has taken a solid lead in early voting, 52 percent to 46 percent. The Libertarian and Green Party candidates make up the rest. To put this in perspective, Davis and her GOP challenger Mark Shelton were almost dead even after early voting in 2012. Davis pulled ahead by winning nearly 55 percent of the Election Day ballots.

Preliminary of course. The replacement for Wnedy Davis is Tea Party activist Konni Burton.

Roberts wins Kansas, boo-yah.

Beyond that, some early "happy talk" via Hot Air...

http://hotair.com/archives/2014/11/04/colorado-kansas-alaska/

Quote
I thought Roberts would win, very narrowly, but if they’re making a call within an hour after the polls closed, there was nothing narrow about this. In the end, the party unified and Republicans came home. Congrats to the whole GOP team on dragging Roberts over the finish line.

Assuming Joni Ernst wins in Iowa, that’s 51. Tillis can make it 52 if he comes through and Dan Sullivan can make it 53 in Alaska in a few hours. A month from now, Bill Cassidy will make it 54 in Louisiana. And Ed Gillespie still has a prayer at making it 55 in Virginia. Oh my!

Also a Beach Boy's song at the link for your funny bone. (wishful thinking  bone?) Who cares, so far, pretty darn good news.

Senator Landrieu (D) will surely lose in the runoff with Cassady in Dec. Voting for Obamacare and gun control is a sure death wish in LA.

That one - Mary Landrieu is the one I wanted to see turned out most of all and the run-off is about a month away. The latest election results I can find so far:

Quote
Sen. Landrieu (D) 599,372 42%
 Cassidy (R) 595,173 41%
 Maness (R) 199,909 14%
 Clements (R) 14,000 1%

I wanted Colorado for their gun control attempt, Mary for her Louisiana Purchase. I think Mary is drawing dead here, all the Maness votes will go to Cassidy.

The GOP easily won the 218 seats required and was on track to match or surpass the 246 seats they held in President Harry S. Truman's administration more than 60 years ago.

Quote
Overall, the GOP gained 14 seats and counting; Democrats, just one.

Quote
Obama suffered an ignominious distinction. The president, whose party lost 63 seats in 2010, saw Democrats lose 12 seats and became the two-term president with the most midterm defeats, edging past Truman's 74 by one.

West Virginia Elects America’s Youngest State Lawmaker

A West Virginia University freshman who did most of her campaigning out of her dorm room became the youngest state lawmaker in the nation Tuesday.

Republican Saira Blair, a fiscally conservative 18-year-old, will represent a small district in West Virginia’s eastern panhandle, about 1½ hours outside Washington, D.C., after defeating her Democratic opponent 63% to 30%, according to the Associated Press. A third candidate got 7% of the vote.....

Quote
.....In a statement, Ms. Blair thanked her supporters and family, as well as her opponents for running a positive campaign. “History has been made tonight in West Virginia, and while I am proud of all that we have accomplished together, it is the future of this state that is now my singular focus,” she said.

Ms. Blair campaigned on a pledge to work to reduce certain taxes on businesses, and she also holds antiabortion and pro-gun positions. She defeated Democrat Layne Diehl, a 44-year-old Martinsburg attorney, whose top priorities included improving secondary education and solving the state’s drug epidemic......

VA has 99.88% of precincts reporting (3 left) and it still hasn't been called.

Ed W. Gillespie Republican 1,053,444 48.37%

Mark R. Warner Democrat 1,069,451 49.1%

I think if it's one percent or less, they can ask for a recount

Pat Quinn Concedes Illinois Gubernatorial Race To Bruce Rauner

Pat Quinn (D) has conceded the Illinois gubernatorial race to Republican challenger Bruce Rauner.

"It's clear that we do not have enough votes to win the election, and therefore we respect the result," Quinn said during a Wednesday afternoon press conference.

It was Quinn's first public statement since insisting late Tuesday night he would not concede until 100 percent of Illinois' votes -- including absentee ballots and early voting ballots -- had been counted.

She wasn't expected to win even though that area is heavy GOP. Good for her!  On a further note...

1. The GOP has won the WV state house of delegates... the first time that has happened since the 1930's.   I never thought I would see the day that happened.

2. The incumbent dem,  Nick Joe Rahall (D), lost the US house of representatives seat he has held for almost 38 years and the other GOP US HOR candidate won too. That leaves WV with only one federal government seat in dem hands... the one held by Manchin.

WV is now effectively lost to the dems for the next two years.   :yahoo:

Perky,

I read that Manchin said today he wasn't interested in switching to the Republicans.  He made it sound like he would rather go home and run for governor instead.

You think he might change his mind, come January?

No. Manchin might be conservative but he comes from a long line of political dems.  State government is eat up with the Manchins and they are all dems. The current head of the dem party, Larry Pucio, was Manchin's chief of staff when he was gov.

Personally, I think Manchin, arrogant ass that he is, cannot stand being a US Senator. Nobody fawns over him like they did when he was Gov and he has an ego the size of Obama. The conventional wisdom being talked about here is that Earl Ray Tomblin, the current Gov and former State Senate President who became Gov when Manchin became senator, will run for the senate seat in 2016 and Manchin will come back and run for governor. He was a very popular governor.

Now all bets are off if the dem candidate for president in 2016 selects him as a running mate. I hope that happens. Better his ass be in DC than here.   :cheersmate:

Republicans gain control of Senate in US midterm elections -

President Obama will face strong opposition in Congress in the rest of his tenure

Nebraska, Omaha. Anakhanum Hidayatova - APA. According to the preliminary results of the midterm elections in the United States, republicans gained the Senate majority.

APA's correspondent, observing the elections reports that republican took control over both houses of congress for the first time over the last eight years. It shows that President Barack Obama will face difficulties and obstacles in both domestic and foreign policy in the rest of his tenure. It is known that Republicans take a firm stance against Russia.

According to the preliminary results, Republicans can hold 55 of the Senate's 100 seats. Republicans currently hold 45 seats.

Republicans grabbed Democratic Senate seats in North Carolina, Colorado, Iowa, West Virginia, Arkansas, Montana and South Dakota. Current Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has already congratulated Republican leader Mitch McConnell.

Republican Ben Sasse won Nebraska Senate race. Jeff Fortenberry was elected to the House of Representatives. Fortenberry said at the meeting with the Azerbaijani delegation that Azerbaijan is an important partner for the U.S.

Midterm elections are held every two years, House of Representatives (435 seats) are re-established and one-third of the 100 Senate seats are renewed. The election results will be officially approved in December.

This just keeps getting better and better.   :yahoo:

Seems some of the long time dems, heavy hitters in the state, have lost their seats.

It will be really interesting if Manchin runs for gov in 2016. The senate seat he vacates will probably go to the GOP, and Manchin may not win depending on who runs against him... especially since Manchin used his dem party super delegate to get obumbles nominated. That has got to be some baggage for ole Joe.

Okay now, the election's over, and the people have spoken, loud and clear.

The Republicans had heretofore "owned" one-sixth of the government, the House of Representatives, and the Democrats five-sixths--the Senate, the White House, and the left-leaning Supreme Court.

(For lurking primitives who don't know, the House and the Senate are the legislative branch, the White House the executive branch, and the Supreme Court the judicial branch--each of the three branches being exactly the equal of the other two.)

We now own one-third of the government.

However, even though twice as much as what we'd owned before, that's still a minority, and the majority rules.

So whatever happens is still the fault of the party that owns the majority of the government.  The Democrats own it; they ain't getting off the hook.

But ONLY if the republicans continually point this out.

I know the dems own 90% of the media but still, republicans need to get in front of cameras as often as possible to get THEIR story across.

Whenever something negative came out about Bill Clinton, at least two dozen dems were out there defending him.  :censored:
