TIGHAR suggests the the pair had to make a forced landing on the coral reef of Nikumaroro after running out of jet fuel roughly 350 miles from their destination, Howland Island.

Aren't turboprops considered jet propeller engines?

I'm way out of my element on planes.

You are right, "jet fuel" is an anachronism. Amelia Earhart's plane would have used gasoline.
